Pointers On Fitting A T-16 Style Bodykit (205) Please

Recommended Posts

Anton green

Any pointers gratefully recieved on fitting a T-16 style wide-arched bodykit pls..

*Front wings would be comlpete replacements obviously (anything to look out for here?)

*Rear wings to be sikaflex'd on and rivetted do they not..

With the rear wings/quarters am I best off leaving all the metal in place beneath the fibreglass arches?

Is there a good way to definitly inhibit any corrosion which may begin to form (sods law) underneath the fiberglass arch? -coating of wax polish maybe after I clean and dry the panel???

Thanks for any input

Any professional paint garage people are more than welcome to show there knowledge on this one!

Anton

Do you have the kit Anton? Which manufacturer is it from?

I'm more than willing to pop over and give a bit of hands on advice :)

I've not fitted a T16 kit, but I've done a few wide arch conversions on Escorts, and it's all pretty much the same technique.

Hi there,

The kit should arrive later this week. I couldn't say which manufacturer made it, but it's this one Here.

Im looking at fitting the kit in a mates unit, then driving to a paint shop to get it all blown over. Nothing spectacular, either plain ol' black or possibly miami blue still... undecided as yet

Is a Dimmer kit anything like a Dimma one then? :)

Well the offer stands mate if you want it. Let me know when the kit arrives and I'll come over, take a look and give you some pointers

Sounds good cheers!

(apparently a DimmER kit is the same as a T-16 going by the pics:))

I think you missed the joke Anton.

Dimma is a company that did a well known wide-bodied conversion of the 205. I just don't think that seller knows how to spell it!

I know of Dimma kits :D

Dimmer seems to be another name for a T-16 kit tho :) as the kit I bought hasn't anything to do with Dimma at all, apart from also being wide arched! In fact, Dimmer looks exactly like a T-16 kit which is what I'm after

Hi Tecknopug

I use the psooc forum a lot, as I'm certain many other people who use this forum do as well. I find it to be strong in some areas, but in other areas this forum, 205 gtidrivers outshines it. Suppose it's only natural two different entities have strengths in different areas.. :)

the rear arches look more like a gutmann kit as the t16 kit doesnt have that step in the arch

I agree. More like a Gutmann Turbo Look 2

Prepare to be annihilated over here when you do actually fit it! :D It does look a nice kit, but someone has chopped out the rear bumper for a couple of "chav cannons!!" Don't you dare get the old double dustbin out again!! :P This link may also interest you for an idea to the finished product, though not quite the same.

The secret is to make sure there is no rust in the car to start with, then no way water can get into the car once the kit is fitted. expanding foam may be a good idea in the gaps!

Get yourself back to the Yorks meets as Paintguy can usually be found at one of these too!!

that actually might be the worst idea! Sorry, but expanding PU foam is the big Watertrap - it´s like a sponge. And it´s ingridients may harm the paint too. Better to wax and seal and drill a few drainage holes.

I saw the rear bumper had been cut out but thats nothing I cant fix

Excellent link there too. You are right of course, and I do prefer the gutmann to the T-16 so thats a bit of a bonus :D Lets just wait and see how many pieces it arrives in after the courier has finished with it.

Fair enough. :)

It's always hard to tell how much people know about a particular subject, so I always tend to assume the worst and dumb down a bit. Sorry if I was trying to teach you to suck eggs.

Following on from Henry's advice, I've used expanding foam in the past, and it does do a great job of stiffening everything up. Care must be taken to avoid creating rust traps obviously, but if used sparingly in the right places it's just the job.
