Most Common Causes Of Oil Loss

An mi16 is loosing oil at a rate of 1L every 500-600 miles. There is a little bit of smoke on start up but it clears. There is no visable signs of an oil leak around the engine bay. Engine still pulls well, any ideas?

Get someone to follow the car - is it smoking on hard acceleration (rings) or on overrun (stem seals)? That's a fair amount of oil to be losing, so if it's not leaking it then it must be burning it...
