Painting Cam Cover - With Durable Finish

Ok here's progress so far..

 

Start with 1 cam cover

 

 

Wire brush it for 20 minutes and finish with some wet 'n dry

 

Clean and bake at 50 degrees for 10 mins

 

 

Let cool down

 

 

Looks a good clean keying surface

 

Custom made spraying booth in utility room, ready for primer once cooled

3 coats of primer later. Rubbed down in between each coat

 

 

After final coat, washed and then wiped with white spirit. Now back in the oven again:

I did the light blue first, then stupidly thought it was dry enough to cover to spray the dark blue. Newspaper then make a mess . When i'm back later in the week i'm hoping I can paint another coat of light blue or two.

Bake it between stripes?

Tonight was the first stripe I painted where I had to edge onto an existing stripe. So it was either going to look crap or may just work.

Well I decided to keep going as i've got laods of things on this w/e. So to learn from my mistake, this time I covered the recently painted red stripe in tin foil when masking the rest of the head up when spraying the yellow. It worked a treat!

 

Here's how it stands now. Just need to sort out the light blue tomorrow and then it's ready for laquer and polish

Need more advice from paintguy on clearcoating....

 

the last time I sprayed laquer on a set of rims i just painted; the paint/laquer cracked badly immediately. This maybe because it was sprayed outside. What tips are there for doing it this time, or is clearcost significantly different from laquer ?

It's just a semantics thing really.

 

Technically, the word lacquer just refers to a cellulose based product, but most still use that term even when they are talking about acrylic, urethane etc.

 

However, since I visit a few US forums, I'm getting myself into the habit of using the term clearcoat. If you say 'lacquer' over there, they have a heart attack! It seems in some states, the penalties for using cellulose based products are almost as heavy as those for committing murder. Only in America....

 

Anyway, the cracking you experienced was almost certainly down to the solvents in the lacquer reacting with the paint underneath. I have to admit that since I work almost exclusively with 2 pack, I'm not entirely sure of which type of paint is compatible with which other, but if you're using celly over celly, or acrylic over acrylic, you should have no worries. I'd be tempted to try a test piece first though, just to be 100% sure.

 

Maybe if Beastie sees this thread he could add a bit more detail, or put me right

Made a good recover from the mishap..phew..

 

 

So wait for paint to dry then clearcoat and polish

No harm in doing that at all. It'll make sure everythings good and dry first. Don't go too heavy with the first coat of clear either. I've only seen it happen rarely, but there's always a chance of the solvents in the clear 'smudging' the edges of your stripes if you put it on really thick. A fairly light one first, covered by a few good ones

All finished now. The finish is rather matt, even after polishing, but the finish is certainly durable:
