[track_prep] My Concourse Trackday 205 Project Diary

Recommended Posts

Rik

Woohoo. Tried to get on the forum here at work today and was successful, It used to deny access to me.

This now means I can spend a little time on here everyday, which in my book means I should start a project diary, as for the past year progress on my 205 has been slowwwww.

The reason Ive been slow in getting the car ready is because Im comfortable with my current daily driver (Mk3 Golf GTI), but for me its far too comfy

Reason is I actually miss the uncomfortableness of my 205, I used to love giving it a good thrashing, and want it back its now been 1 year since driving it and I miss it greatly.

Heres a few pics of my golf if anyones interested?

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j104/P4RCX/CIMG0083.jpg

I bought my Pug a Black 1.9 GTi with over 100,000 miles on the clock for £300 in March/Apr 2004 and enjoyed a good year of problem free driving.

Previous to this Pug I owned a 205 XS 1.4, and a few forum members may remember I replaced with a 106 Gti 1.6 16v Engine, but this was written off on New Years day of 2004 nightmare!

To start Ill discuss what I want the car to be, so you can get an understanding of what Im hoping this monster to be!

The main use of the car will be on the track and the odd weekend drive to test any new mods etc. Ill be insuring the car on a limited mileage policy so Ill have to keep the weekend drives to a minimum.

The specification of the car will be as follows, (obviously due to change)

Body

Exterior

Fully re-sprayed body shell in Magnum Gris (Steel Grey)

Black Bumpers and arches with Red Trim

Fog lights replaced for Brake Vents.

Modified Fuel Tank

Interior

OMP 10 Point Bolt-in Roll Cage Powder Coated Matt Black

Recaro Profi Bucket Seat(s)

4 or 6 point Harnesses

Relocated Battery

S/S Braided Fuel Lines

Stripped Dash Dont know how much yet

Suspension

Front

GAZ Coilovers 285lb Springs

MED Eccentric Top Mounts

RalDes Wishbone and ARB Polybushes

Custom Rose Jointed Wishbones

Quik-Rak 2.5 P-P Steering Rack.

(All parts powder coated including subframe and hubs)

Rear

309 Rear Beam Fully Rebuilt and Powder Coated 23mm Torsion bars and 24/25mm ARB

Gaz Rear Shocks

(All Parts Powder Coated)

Brakes

Braided Hoses all round with copper pipe in-cabin.

Wilwood Bias Valve

Standard Handbrake

Front

Wilwood 4 Pot Calipers

285mm Vented discs

Rear

Standard Calipers / Drilled and Vented Discs.

Engine Hoping for around 200bhp

Fully Re-built 1.9 Mi16 Ally Block

Unsure on Cam Choice?!?

GSXR 750 Throttle Bodies

Megasquirt ECU

Custom Quick Release Wiring Loom

Mocal oil cooler

S16 Sump Baffles and Windage Tray

Gearbox

Quick Shift Linkage

Rose-jointed Gear Linkages

Quaife ATB Differential

Its quite a big spec, but most of the parts have either been bought or I have the money to buy them, so its now just a matter of putting it all together once the shell has been sprayed.

As you may well have noticed, I have powder coated a lot of the parts, especially the suspension etc. The car will not have one rusty part on it when completed

Its being built to last another 17 years!

Im building this car to last, my main aim is to show the car for a few times and at least try and win a show (Pugfest / FCS etc), as in my eyes the car will be Concours, but after that I will use the car as a track car so it will lose its shineyness but I will try my best to keep it in tip-top condition.

I will attach some pics of the car when I get home today.

Ill continue the Diary Year One Update on the next post..

Thanks for listening

Rik

Everything about them is wrong. They dont fit the pillars well, poor welding, poor material and the brackets that attatch the door bars in are very weak. Ok they may be easy to fit but you can get safety devices, rollcentre, custom cages for reasonable money and they will properly fit the car and do a far better job. I have fitted one omp cage in gravel rally car before and the shell fell to pieces compared with a car with a propper cage. The rear beam mounting they use is also very weak. I am talking from experiance on this.

What's the issue with an OMP cage?

I have fitted one and it seems perfectly adequate. (alas a bit of a fiddle to fit)

Can understand the need of a full on weld in effort for a seam welded rally car. Not really needed for a fast road or track day car is it? ;)

No i didnt think so really, its going to save my life if i roll it.

But with regards to holding the shell together, i'm sure jonnie rallies his 205's so they an under more harsh conditions like pot holes, jumps, bumps etc than a nice smooth track!

Having trouble with pics of my pug but they'll be here soon!

Update time! Now its been over a week since i first started! Hope your all geared up for Christmas??

I was hoping this will get put in the project forum, but maybe i need some worthy pics to let you know i'm serious about this project!

Been busy these last few weeks, got me self a new place to work on the car. I originally had a storage unit so couldnt get much work done on the shell previously!

As promised i've gone and got a few pics for you all to view,

Over the past week i have been getting the Pug from this

The shell is soon to go on its side, once i get the Escort Cosworth out the way as i'm not risking it falling into that - i might ruin the Peugeot lol!

Other parts i've had powder coated include:

Trailing Arms

ARB End Mounts

Rear Bean to Chassis Mounts

Bumper Support Brackets

All Engine Mounts

Bumper Brackets (What the bumper attaches to Front & Rear)

And lots more... Will post pics when i begin to fit them!

I jumped the gun a little on getting some parts powder coated as now i've stripped it i've found so much more that can be done

Thanks for listening

Quick Update,

I'm happy to be included in the new forum area along with some other great cars - and i promise you all one day mine too will be great!?!

This week has been spent cleaning the shell, i'm waiting for the lump of an escort to be moved soon as so i can get the shell out side and give it a good jet wash off.

In the meanwhile i've bolted the frame to the shell so it can be turned on its side so i can easily sort the rust out underneath.

Heres a pic of the frame(s) bolted to the shell,

Chassis_Frame.thumb.jpg

Door_Support.thumb.jpg

Ive also taken some more pics of the powder coated trailing arms and wishbones,

DSCF0568.thumb.jpg

Its Christmas petty much this weekend so Im having a rest for the next few days,

But next week I will have the car on its side ready to attack the rust. But before this Im going to put a sheet of Tarpaulin up between the Pug and escort to avoid it getting damaged by flying sparks and shrapnel!

Nice work, looking forward to see some pics of nasty rust removal work later on :D

See you coiped my rather simple way of just making som brackets that'll let you get it over on it's side without getting any crushed panels. Worked ok with me :D

Thanks fella, your idea was genious!

I'm gonna put some rust 'before', 'in-work' and 'after work' pics up when i start with the shell.

The 'before' ones are herendous though and i dont think i can do it all my self!

Quick update

Recent activity includes the following:

Cutting Down Fuel Tank

Fuel Tank has now been cut down, and a plate has been made ready to weld back on.

Removed Original Seat Rails

Had a tricky time doing this but got there in the end using a decent spot weld drill bit. Ive also acquired some 1 box section and some genuine Recaro side mounts so will be fitting the seat very soon.

Recently realised before i do this I need to refit the pedals !!!!!

Cleaned Shell and Under-side

Some major progress made here, as Im not in my own lock-up, before I can do any welding/grinding/sanding/spraying I need to enclose my car off to my mates cars.

To do this I needed to fit a 12ft x 14 sheet, but before this could be done I needed to move the car so I could get some ladders up to the roof and baton the sheet to the rafters.

So I when I knew I had to move the car I took the opportunity to clean the shell, outside the lock-up.

It would take 5 people to safely lift the car up and put it on its side using the home-made stand. (I tell you its not easy getting 5 people to one place at the same time for longer than ten minutes!)

BIG PIC

Fitted Bucket Seat

After removing the original rails, I got hold of some 1 box section and began the fitting of the seat.

The idea was to Tack weld the rails in place so the seat height and driving position could be tried before the rails could be properly welded in place, as Ill be getting all welding done by the people at the paint-shop.

It took a while to get it fitted in the right position but I eventually got there.

Heres a pic of one of the seat rails in position in position

BIG PIC

I've been buying some new bits and bobs recently, and attacking the rust so check the Projects gallery for more pics.
