Brown Multiplug Wiring

Recommended Posts

peapea

Hi All,

After problems with my starter motor i've discovered that the dreaded brown multiplug looks past it,

I've ordered and recieved a new 6 way superseal connector from simtek. I've read on here that it's worth replacing the starter solenoid and earth wires.

Can anyone tell me what type/diameter of cable i need for these as i'm doing the plug tomorrow & I want to be prepared as I wont be able to get to a car shop very easily once it's all in pieces! :D

2.5 stranded should be fine for the starter solenoid although on mine I did away with the brown plug and through crimped everything no problems since.

So is that 2.5mm dia multistrand?

Sorry, I just want to be sure so I can get it all ready today!

There are seven wires through the multiplug.

Thanks Graham,

I've got a single superseal connector also for doing the starter solenoid,

the 6 pin for the other connections.

Do you know what all the wires in the plug are for, it'd be nice to know.

Have a search, even the order of them has been posted before iirc.

They are;

  • Starter solenoid.
  • Oil pressure sender.
  • Low oil pressure stop switch.
  • Alternator field wire.
  • Water temp.
  • Water temp warning switch.
  • Oil temp switch.

Graham.

Thanks Graham,

Got the plug done, what a difference, starting is great now, no clicks! Also no more fluctuating oil pressure gauge.

Well worth doing

I was on the verge of buying a superseal plug to do the exact same thing with today, but after it came to £19+ after p&p (which I thought was a little high for a couple sets of connectors) I thought I'd make my own waterproof connectors using 15A spade connectors.

Now however I'm thinking again after happening upon this thread. Will spades do the job as well if I waterproof them by housing them in a potting box of sorts, or should I be looking to buy the suuperseals?

Opinions appreciated,

Thanks Anton

I take it then that if I follow the lead from the starter to the brown multiplug tomorrow, when I am sorting the starter, and cut off the plug then rejoin the wires, It may very well clear my starting issues such as just a click when keys turned, starter turning lazily etc??

where did you get that price???

try simetec, when I placed an order online a lady rang back (can remember her first name, it was a Simkins!!) she just wanted to check if it was ok to stick the stuff in a bog standard first class rather than courier, postage was, only a quid then :)

the crimp with the superseal connectors is far superior to the basic squashed connector, and the seals are spot on, plus point also being that you can slpit the joint without disturbing any seal.

I was that impressed with them that I stuck them on my Driving lamp plugs too :D

and also this yellow connector for the Lamps.

replace the spade connector on the solenoid as well, give the terminal a good scrub with a small wire brush/fine emery paper/

clean all the other earths you spot as well.

I got the price from the simetec website! ..Just about to click on confirm order or whatever and I was greeted by an astounding p&p charge

Im going to ring them tomorrow if their number is on the website and see what they can do for me re postage. Fairly sure it doesn't need a special courier :D:) !

Can I not just get rid of the brown mutliplug and then reconnect the wires using bullet / spade connectors and then insulating tape?

yes, but thats the s*ite way of doing it, and will only be a temporary fix, they will fail even quicker than the original plug, hence the superseal connectors mentioned before.

Before you do, know this- I rang simetec today and they were able to sort me something on postage so I bought them there and then.

I was going to use spade connectors soldered on, then mounted inside a clear plastic waterproof tube. But for peace of mind and only having to bump start the pug for another couple of days (hopefully), Im going to just do the job once using the proper equiptment..

Question though, with the superseal connectors is the crimping tool a specialised item or will any crimping type tool do the job. I suppose what this means, is what shape do the crimping jaws form when crimping? (has anyone got a small pic handy?)

The wire itself could also be corroded (black copper oxide) for about 2 inches either side of the plug so it's best to either change the entire wire or chop out a couple of inches either side of the plug. This hasn't fixed mine perfectly as the main earth from the gearbox to the battery still needs attention, I think, but it has helped.

Sorted the starter out today and seems to be ok now. Only thing is no matter how hard I tried I could not find the brown multiplug at all! Was I looking inn the right place? In the mass of tubes under the AFM and hosing etc?

when it comes to electricity i wouldn,t bodge anything even thou it may only be twelve volts bodge usauly means poor connection which inturn equals heat ,heat and oil/fuel equals good bye pug  best thing is always to make conection as good as poossible then check it sayafter 100miles.

Perhaps a previous owner removed the plug entirely?

The best way I can describe the position of the brown M/plug is -if you look directly down in the engine bay.......

In fact a pic says a thousand words. If it's not where the replacement superseal connector is in this pic,

8504PICT_10488_multiplug_highlighted.JPG it may have been removed

What did you do to sort out your starting probs scumbag?
