Turbo Technics Valve Clearances

Recommended Posts

Mad Professor

Hi All.

Can anyone please tell me if the 1.9 Turbo Technics Valve Clearances are the same as standard 1.9 GTi valve clearances?

As far as I am aware turbo technics did not adjust anything top end of the engine.

The old joke book has the following details for the standard 1.9 GTi.

Inlet: 0.15 to 0.25 mm

Exhaust: 0.35 to 0.45 mm

So would this mean in an ideal world that it would be.

Inlet: 0.20mm

Exhaust: 0.40mm

Thanks.

I've never heard of TT changing the valve clearances.

Dave baker (pumaracing) recommends:

Inlet: 0.20 to 0.25 mm

Exhaust: 0.30 to 0.35 mm

Ok thanks.

I am tring to get rid or at least lower the top end rattles.

I have now fitted knock sensor for use with my MegaSquirt ECU, and it is just picking up on engine noise to much.

I will get out to the car as soon as the sun comes out.

Thats the problem with those sensors... Not really needed if mapped correctly though.

She not yet maped witch is part of the resign why I have the knock sensor all fitted now, to aid with the tuning and mapping of the ecu.

Worth doing in the search for a quieter valvetrain then! :)

srack: Is it just the pistons you need? If so you can just get some dished to suit. TT will do this for about £130 but want the old ones as a template (which you get back too). Since you don't have these you can either find someone with some lying about, get an engine builder to do it without a template, reducing compression ratio to 8.6:1. Or buy some from http://www.hiflowheads.co.uk second hand.

Proff, most of the clearance figures can be attributed to carbon build up on the valve seats. Bear that in mind.

saveloy: Fair point.

How long does it normaly take to get carbon build up on the valve seats.

I have also been thinking about chnaging oil grade, I have always run GTX 10w40 with the turbo.

What grade do you peps think I should use or should I just stick with the GTX 10w40?

Depends on how you drive it!

Personally i'd run something like mobil1 or equivelant...remember this isnt a std TT...so you'll have even more heat build up. Destroying the oils properties much quicker.

It's a 205 TT how do you think I drive it :D

So are you saying stick with the same grade but just change the make?

Dont use anything other than mineral oil! I found the Valvoline Turbo stuff and Valvoline Racing the best oils.

If you'd had a TT Richard you'd know that :D

I disagree - use the best fully-synth that you can afford - the Pug internals may appreciate mineral but the temps that you are going to be running in your turbo, you really need full-synth. Sylkoline Pro-S for example.

With regards to your valve clearances - you don't have a "standard" 1.9 head though?! I thought that you had some Stage 4, big valve, Hi-Flow job??

Yes the head is a HighFlow jobby.

I have e-mailed them regarding valve clearances for this head, but as of yet not heard back.

The Vavoline stuff can handle those temps Andy.

Bring up an oldish post.

I spoke to highflowheads regarding the Valve Clearances thay said it would be the same as stock.

Witch as stated above is.

Inlet: 0.15 - 0.25mm

Exhaust: 0.35 - 0.45mm

I have been speaking to Alan Jeffery, and he seems to think to give the exhaust a Clearance of 0.30mm.

So if eveyone thinks it will be ok I would like to reshim my engine to give me the following clearances.

Inlet: 0.15mm

Exhaust: 0.30mm

What do you think?

i found mobil 1 and castrol rs just too thin, even on a rebuilt engine made it a bit noisy, I now just semi-sinthetic and change every 1500-2000 miles
