They are the same;

205 1.6 GTI 3.251 1.850 1.360 1.069 0.865 - 4.063

They did a close ratio box with slightly different gear ratios though;

205 1.6 GTI Close ratio 3.308 1.882 1.280 0.969 0.757 - 4.063

Full list of ratios.

A search would've found this.

Graham.

You've been reading too many Haynes manuals:

3.251 1.850 1.360 1.069 0.865 - 43%, 26%, 21%, 19%

3.308 1.882 1.280 0.969 0.757 - 43%, 32%, 24%, 22%

I've never seen a 3.308 1st or 1.882 2nd. Every BE1 and BE3 from that era seems to have a 1.85 2nd.

I simply copied & pasted the info from the page I linked to.

But they are supposed to be the ratio's for the europe only Be1 close ratio box which is very rare. (& imo would suck on the 105bhp engine)

reverse gear was relocated and some of the bearings were uprated.

reverse by first is a BE1, reverse by 5th is BE3.

ahhh. thanks. I take it the fact that it's a later improved box the 3 is the more desirable?

Miles

No major change with anything inside until 1994 (Yes selectors etc) with a revised reverse gear to help stop cruncing into reverse, All bearings are the same thru-out as are the synro's with a minor differance
