306 Derv Rough Running

Recommended Posts

Jer309GTi

Our 306 Dturbo isn't very healthy ATM.

When it starts, it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders and the clears itself after a while. Also, occasionally after it's cleared itself it just cuts out, then it takes a few turns to start it.

When its up to temperature and idling it sounds really rough, best way to describe it is like a car with a carbed engine that the chokes pulled out to much, a really lumpy idle.

When your driving it it pulls very well, and doesn't smoke at all once warmed up even when getting a thrashing.

Obviously the poor starting sounds like a glow plug problem, so I've changed these for some new Bosch ones, but it's still the same. I've tried some diesel treatment (prob does nothing but thought I'd try it) and still the same.

The poor starting puts me in the mind of an injector playing up, and the lumpy idle maybe a fuel pump issue? Anyone experienced these problems and got some advice, before I start pulling it all apart and replacing bits?

Thanks, and sorry for the essay :D

sounds like your overfuelling, could either be a faulty engine coolant temp sensor or diesel pump needs adjusting. sensor will cost you about 14 quid

Is it an HDI???

well you wont have dual mass flywheel then, so it rules that out, lol

Is it smoking when it first starts up? If so, what colour? Does it smoke noticeably when warm and under power?

Is it hard to start from cold or does it fire straight away but sounding like only on three and lumpy?

My prime suspect, if it has a Bosch pump, would be air leaks on the suction side of the pump. The usual suspects that cause this are perished leakoff pipes (the little black pipes diasy-chained between the injectors and back to the pump) or a perished priming bulb. Lucas CAV pumps don't suffer this problem to such an extent.

Leaks on the suction side of the pump never weep diesel, only air, so there is no "tell-tale" of leaking diesel.

It could also be an air leak around the fuel filter or a fuel filter well up for replacement.

Eliminate all other causes by giving the engine a full service, especially filters.

This all assumes you have the old fully mechanical pump. If you have a pump controlled by an ECU then favourite suspects are the TDC sensors on the flywheel and the lift sensor on No. 2 (IIRC) injector. It is worth checking the connections to these before condemming the sensors or the clever injector with the lift sensor..

If it is none of the above, have the injectors serviced and the pump operation checked by a diesel specialist.

Is it losing coolant? My STDT gave similar symptoms when the headgasket (a weak point on XUD engines) was going...

Thanks for the replies ;)

It isn't loosing coolant, have been keeping an eye on this as said is a bit of weak spot

I did a full service on it around easter time, not done a lot of miles since then. All filters were changed, and I changed the fuel filter again a couple of weeks ago

I haven't checked the leak-off pipes, I must admit. Here's hoping theyre the cause of the trouble :D

The smoke is blue when it starts up, not white as if the H/G was gone. When it's nice and warm it doesn't smoke at all and goes well with no hesitations etc.

Cheers

Rough starting is generally glow plugs but they rarely (very rarely) stall so not sure this is linked or not.

rough idleing doesn't indicate faulty glow plugs tho. I'd be going along with jim, and be checking the fuel system isn't drawing in air somewhere.

I am no expert but just to let you know that i have a complete diesel turbo sat in my drive so if you need anything then im more than willing to box it and send it or maybe meet you half way. You can have anything you want for lots less than a diesel specialist me thinks?

Cheers for the offer. I'm going to check it over for air leaks and if that doesn't sort it I'll send you a PM about the bits
