205 Xs - Mi16

Recommended Posts

Hi iv just bought a 205 xs and i would like to mi16 it ideally for that "sleeper" look, iv heard its a pain in the arse in the xs and too much hassle unless your the greatest mechanic and really know your stuff and i dont know much about these engines so...

should i do it or go for 106 gti lump?

if so what would i need parts wise and how to? ie is there any welding needed? like brackets or would it slot in using excisting mounts? etc etc

all help and things i need to know would be very much appreciated

thanks

I've fitted the 106 GTi engine and the Mi16 into TU engined 205 and 309's, the Mi16 is easier, you only need a GTi front subframe, shafts, hubs and fuel tank/lines, the rest is easy really. Fitting the 106 GTi engine is more involved, the exhaust and wiring are more difficult to resolve, the driver side engine mount needs to be ground away to a dodgy level and you'll still need to fit the GTi tank and high pressure lines; also the nearside driveshaft doesn't fit well intot the later 106 box and you can't use the 205 box because the crank sensor window isn't in the same place.

Having had both engines, i'd always say go with the Mi16, it's more poweful, comes with a far better gearbox and has enormous potential. It weighs virtually the same as the 106GTi engine too (about 5kg difference by my observations) believe it or not!

a list of parts etc would be a great help then i set about sourcing them, haynes manual mmihgt help too, goin to just plumb it in and get a specialist to do the rest with wiring etc etc

If it's post '89, the drivers side mount is the same as XU anyway, pre '89 cut it out and weld in the XU one. I really wouldn't fall back on the TU 16v, it's more work for less power.
