Oil Pressure

i am starting to get agrovated by my oil pressure it seems to be in the red all the time rarely comes out of it only to drop back in it again

 

i dont know what causes low oil pressure apart from petrol contamination lol as i read in a searched thread

 

so any clues on what low oil pressure is means what it does havent got a clue

 

i am getting the impression that the oil pressure sensors and sendors themselves arent very fool proof so anyone know how i can test the oil pressure myself ???

does the oil pressure light come on when the gauge is in the red? if not then its probably the sender or wiring (assuming the light works at all, it should come on when you turn the ignition on and go out when the engine starts)

I had an oil pressure gauge that was all over the palce, turned out to be a dodgy wire on the back of the clocks.

It would work for 5minutes if you hit the top of the dashboard

yeh thanks for the replys guys i fiddled with the wire and it blipped again i think its a dodgey wire because the warning light doesnt come on

 

so i gonna replace a couple wires and the sendor unit

my normally good oil pressure has been up and down for 2 days now.tonight was wierd, took it out in the cooler air, got some decent performance at last, but the oil started losing pressure, red light flickering on idle ect, then all of a sudden its back up to normal!

 

low oil levels can cause low pressure, im not using any oil though!

It's sort of been said already, but a low pressure guage is not always bad news.

 

The red light (fed by the pressure switch - a totaly seperate entity) is pretty bad though.

 

I've had low pressure since rebuilding my Mi. I've not been too worried about it as oil changes reveal nothing untoward and the red light hasn't come on. She still sounds ok for an Mi as well.

 

Pay heed to the red light though and ensure that's working fine, it could be your saviour

I have always found French mechanicals to be far better than French Electrics. Of the two 205s I have owned oil pressure problems have always been bad electrics. To check run a cable directly from the sensor to as close to the gauge as you can get.

Is the red stop telltale light not fed off the oil pressure gauge?? If so its quite possible to have good oil pressure, but a dodgy gauge, that in turn puts the red stop light on. (fingers crossed anyway!)

the oil warning light, and therefore i assume the stop light is fed from a pressure switch seperate to the pressure gauge sender.

So if the red lights come up then its probably best to stop :S

well that is good news then i guess my oil pressure light comes on when ignistion is on

 

if the warning light doesnt come on but the guage is in the red whats the point in having a guage

 

why have a guage that doesnt actually warn you of anything lol

 

i will just follow back all cables and probably replace the sendor unit as well

Been having a bit of grief myself. Yesterday my pressure gauge needle was sat in the red at hot idle, however the warning light wasn't lit so I ignored it. Did a search on here and went out this morning and checked the warning lamp lit with just ignition on.. it didn't, arse.

 

Dug an old leccy pressure gauge and sender I had from one of my old Escorts, fitted it ghetto style and went for a burn.. good news. Im getting a rock solid 50+psi at 3k rpm and 20-25psi @ idle (900rpm), oil temp gauge needle is pointing at the second thicker marker.. ie.. nice and warm.

 

|If your in any doubt get a cheap gauge in there with some proper marks on it, I've had this £15 Tim guage about 4years, it's not the most accurate but at least it's better than a lot of the stock gauges.

Mine is fine when first started, heated up it idles on almost no reading.

 

That to me is overly thin oil.

ok thats very usefull bit of info i have no clue were i can get one from though

 

if anyone knows post a reply or pm would be great i will go buy one asap just wanna know my car is ok
