Anyone Running An Inlet Temperature Guage

Recommended Posts

mak

Been looking everywhere for a inlet temperature guage so I can keep an eye on the charge temperature. Found plenty for exhaust gasses but not what I want.

Anyone know where to get one from? either new or a car to check in the scrappie

I've seen people simply use one of those kitchen temp gauges with a remove probe... just mount/tape/stick the probe where you want and run the wire back to the digital gauge and there you go, nice and cheap to!

I found that did the job at scats the farm whole sale place i think it was ment for a green house.

Had a digital display with a remote sensor cost a tenner and worked a treat on my charged saxo.

I've used a couple of those one's designed for computers before, just make sure you get ones which are known to be accurate (a few of them are +/- 5 degrees, which is naff). As a plus point they're already 12v and come with a little LCD readout. All for about £15.

What sort of temp ranges are expected for the inlet on a turbo'd car? Yes I know it is down to the size of the intercooler but is there a max temp?

Also are there any temp sensors that screw in because if it just pushes in a hole then it isn't ideal when under pressure as it could pop out.

I've been trying to find the equation between degress of temp increase and bhp loss but have had no luck yet. I'm interested in seeing what temps are currently running on my TT intercooler and then discovering what, if any, differences/improvements are to be had installing a Cosworth intercooler.

I tried a mock up of my temp and boost gauges in the stereo slot yesterday. They fit perfectly and right in my eye-line - so all good!

snap on do a wicked scanner, u plug it into the diagnostic port and it tells u all kinds of things, boost, advance, inlet temp,rpm,co2 ectect!was pleased to see my intercooler getting the temps down even when revving the nuts off my car on the spot!

That scanner has been used on my CTI Turbo as i still have the diag port. It shows the lambda adjusting the fuelling, MAP reading etc. They aren't cheap though!

and won't work with a gti running jetronic either, because they don't have diagnostic ports (well, not one that's OBD compliant anyway)

couldn't you tap into the air temp sensor in the AFM? just depends on it's calibration scale to make some display circuitry (voltage into temperature maybe)

if not, the 405 SRi has an IAT sender in the pipework from the airbox, these just pop out - same problems with designing a display though (calibration)

I plan to, yes. But buying the actual Mp3 player and amp is quite a way down my list at the moment.

This is fairly easy, and then again it's not. There is no way of predicting exactly what your gain or loss wil be. but:

Given a certain engine the amount of power it is capable of producing depends on the mass of air it can consume. so if the only changed variable is air temperature it is not bad to estimate that the change in power will be somewhat simmilar to the change in density of the air.

That is as far as one could go in general. but beware soldom does only one variable change. Changing an intercooler could even result in a raise of temparature and a gain in horsepower!

when i was running an escort rs turbo my tuner said 2 get inlet temperatures bout 45'c , as anything near60/65 would start 2 retard timing, but u can also go 2 cold i beleive as when i first brought the car it had water inj & on a nice winter afternoons could see inlet of bout 5'c(with water inj working), now i dont no what would be happening in the engine ie good or bad.

just bout 2 attempt this on my 205 TD 2 c what is going on as they have no intercoolers then my fit the xantia cooler that ive got, its only a run about mind u, :D

for fitting my act sensor was done by just placing the pickup(was like 2 wires with a resistor soldered on the end), checkin was hanging bout middle of the hose.under the last piece of silcon pipe b4 the inlet manifold then it was secured down by the silcon hose being tigtened with a jubilee clip

just did a quick search on eaby 4 act gauge = http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/subaru-TURBO-BOOST-A...1QQcmdZViewItem

unsure bout the sensor end as had 1 friend just put his sensor between the hosing & never removed the cover from around it , this then melted & then stuck his throttle open . :D

That would sound about right. On the Emerald site, they talk about being concerned that the temps on the TT they fitted with management was running about 70c and suggesting a better intercooler. I will try and get mine running with the standard TT intercooler before fitting the Cossie one, to try and get some sort of comparison. Unfortunately I won't be able to supply any before/after power figures though.

I am still thinking about this and seeing Teknopugs post about his gauges set me off on a search again!!

I have found these on ebay and they seem a decent price too

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Air-charge-temp-gaug...1QQcmdZViewItem

Has anyone run one of these? I may even be tempted to swop my clock for one!

Alternatively I have an inlet temp sensor fitted to my throttle body for the Mp3.2 ECU

2Skip-Engine.jpg

What gauge can I fit to display these temps?

hey guys i got a temprature reader thingy fitted and i think it's the screw in type. I think it's in the inlet manifold and i get readings of 40c - 45c after a good hammering. I'm not mechanicly minded but the bit thats been screwed in has "temp" written on it.. I can take a few photos of the engine bay if required.

The Autometer one I have also needs to be screwed in - they sell seperate threaded plugs - so you just need to drill a hole and then weld it in place. I haven't got round to doing this yet.

I did fit my vacuum/boost gauge today though. I was a little pushed for time and didn't seal it properly (3mm nylon tube going into a 6mm T piece) but it's showing max boost of 9psi (might rise slightly once I get it totally sealed) which is good. Although, I was hoping that it would read about 7psi so that I could whack the boost up :D

I have bought one of these:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?TabID=...No=3258&doy=2m9

3258i0.jpg for a play to see how my inlet temp is running. I think I will fit it near the throttle body so I can see the temperature that is going into the inlet.

Thought I do already have a temp sensor fitted in the throttle body for theMotronic 3.2 ECU as it needs one to adjust the fuelling

2Throttle_body_temp_sensor-med.JPG

Anyone out there able to tell me what i need to read this output? Could I rig it up to this to get a reading? This will also read up to nearly 70 degrees C and has a calibration pot on it apparently.

i assume as i have a spare mangoletsi inlet manifold takeoff I can get a snug fitting pluf gtom autometer ? Would really like one of these
