Exploding Rotor Arm

As the engine was running a bit rough I decided to change the dizzy cap and rotor arm as they looked pretty worn out. I popped to Halfords to get some new parts and fitted them, and the car seemed to run far more sweetly. However, the next day while driving along the A27, the engine lost all power and there was a puff of smoke from the exhaust. When I took the thing apart, the rotor arm had shattered, so the metal part had come free! Needless to say I wasn't best pleased, and Halfords did give me a replacement, but how long is it going to last? Has this happened to anyone else?

Someone manage to blow a hole in their dizzy cap a week or so back. Don't know if it was a similar problem. I think they said it was a new one so just took it back and swapped it. Can't remember where it was posted on here tho sorry.

the rotor arm shaft of the dizzy is worn so this is likely to happen again

what happens is it move more and hits the connections at a good speed

 

cure insulation tape on the shaft be4 putting the rotor arm on so the fit is tight

 

also could of been why it was runing rough too

The rotor arm seemed a very tight fit, a bit too tight if anything; so it doesn't appear to be worn in terms of it's diameter.

 

However it is now running rough again only a couple of days after fitting. It's misfiring at low to medium revs and needs playing with the choke to get the

thing running tolerably. So I wonder whether it is worn in some other way?

 

The engine also runs on a bit after turning it off, is this related?

lol used to get that with my old nova, would sit there waving the keys at it n it'd be chuggin away tryin to keep on going. It stopped everytime i changed the oil strangely, became a useful guild to knowing the oil needed doing.

Few years ago I had a Halfords rotor arm (2 wks old) where the locating lug broke off inside! allowed the dizzy to spin without rotor but sometimes caught on the ridge and ran.Only time in 8 yrs a pug hasn't got me home! Local pug "specialists" towed it away,relieved me of £300 and didn't fix it. Few weeks ago needed a rotor arm on a Sunday, Halfords is only .5 mile away so tried them, got rotor arm to check-out before noticing the copper was not connected to the plastic!! I now carry a spare......

I did another check with the new arm and sure enough there was a bit of play.

It seems that the shaft has tapered slightly. I've put some tape over it now and

it runs a lot better, I can even have the choke fully in!
