Ignition Timing Question

Recommended Posts

macaroni

With or without the vacuum pipe connected, my car idles much better with the ignition at maximum advance. ie with the dizzy turned entirely one way.

Is it safe to run it like this, or should I set it to 8degrees BTDC and suffer a lumpy idle and judders at low speeds?

Any help gratefully received.

have you wound it *right* the way round?!

sounds 'experimental'! :)

i always thought the best way of setting your own timing was to advance it until it just starts pinking, then retard it back a smidge

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I haven't driven it with it fully advanced, but I will try and see if it pinks. Although I am not sure I will hear it pinking as it makes so much noise anyway!

If I have to I will suffer the cam, as yesterday I span the wheels in 3rd overtaking someone as the revs hit 5000...
