Although friction is not just down to the material type...

Absolutely correct. A poor choice of words on my part but if I had said a "Teflon" finish people may have wondered what relevance saucepans were! :D In actual fact iirc glass has a higher co-efficient than mild steel at around 0.95 compared to 0.74 of the steel.( I think). :P

Or perhaps just said "assuming they were frictionless" ?

Lateral thinking that. :D

Just to be difficult... Is the engine, sat on a stand, running hot in a car, or stationary (cold) in the car?

People have said about the 'tension', state of certain materials, which can be applied to a spring -like movement in a rough sense.. but no-one has mentioned the 'plastic' state of materials...

Have a look at this.. and for the educated it shall make sense

http://www.key-to-steel.com/Articles/Art43.htm

I know this article is only applicable to steel, as someone might point that out, but the same theories and principles can be applied to all other materials in the subject (engine) that we are talking about.

Sorry to confuse things... as a simple answer i could have given, but just thought i'd make more thought, and considerations.

p.s... no-one has mentioned the bonnet release catch spring!! haha
