Dixon 1 Posted January 9, 2006 (edited) I have removed the aircon and power steering from my gti-6 engine and therefore need a shorter Aux belt with a repositioned tensioner. This gives me 2 positions the tensioner could go as shown in the pic below. Position A or B. With the crankshaft rotating clockwise, the belt at tensioner position B would be under tension and at position A under Compression. It will be easier to fit the tensioner at position B but would it be better off on the looser part of the belt? I.e. position A? http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c67/alan...nerposition.jpg Edited January 9, 2006 by pugtorque
Craigb 2 Posted January 9, 2006 Position A is the correct postion
Dixon 1 Posted January 9, 2006 (edited) What consequences do you think having the tensioner in position B would cause? Is it just that the pulley might not last as long? Or have more slack in the belt? Edited January 9, 2006 by Dixon
Craigb 2 Posted January 10, 2006 Its just standard mechanical practice to put the tensioner on the "slack" side of a pulley arrangement . The tensioner may well experience more load on the oposite side. Also if the belt is performing a timing function the action of tensioning would alter the relationship of the two pulleys. In your application though it is not critical
