Tensioner Postion?

Recommended Posts

Dixon

I have removed the aircon and power steering from my gti-6 engine and therefore need a shorter Aux belt with a repositioned tensioner.

This gives me 2 positions the tensioner could go as shown in the pic below. Position A or B.

With the crankshaft rotating clockwise, the belt at tensioner position B would be under tension and at position A under Compression.

It will be easier to fit the tensioner at position B but would it be better off on the looser part of the belt? I.e. position A?

What consequences do you think having the tensioner in position B would cause?

Is it just that the pulley might not last as long? Or have more slack in the belt?

Its just standard mechanical practice to put the tensioner on the "slack" side of a pulley arrangement .

The tensioner may well experience more load on the oposite side.

Also if the belt is performing a timing function the action of tensioning would alter the relationship of the two pulleys.

In your application though it is not critical
