Anyone With 1.6 With Twin 40's

Recommended Posts

Guest ashnicholls

What jets, emulsoin tubes, chokes, and everything else are you running.

i have a pair of webers, that are over jetted, so i wanted to jet them roughly, while i run my fully recond engine in, an then get it rolling roaded when i can afford it,

but in the mean time, it needs roughly rejetting, so i just want to see how far out they are.

cheers ash

Try asking Sam (guy with the white rallye). He had twin 40's on his 1.6 vtr engine.

rough settings

max power 34mm chokes

135 mains

180 airs

rest needs setting up on the rollers/road.

might get away with less choke say 32mm but i don't know your engine spec.

Make sure you get the ign right as plenty of power can be gained from the ign side of things

we dont really get on.

Since when

I can probably dig out my old jetting if its any use? Taffycrooks settings are going to be much closer as he has done quite a few setups on them i'd imagine.

i dont know, just thought you were off with me.

ok. was thinking about using the 32mm's that are in it, because i want more torque than power.

yes can you tell me your settings please sam.

i will be running:

xu10 head, 4-1 manifold.

cheers

o yeah the most important thing you want to know, is thats its a 1.6

heres what its got in it

32mm Chokes

Air Corrector Jets = 135

Emulsion Tubes = F49

Main Jets = 140

Idling Jets = 55F8

Pump Jets = 40

cheers

you sure the airs are 135 and not 185.

torque is directly related to engine size and VE. Size is fixed so the only way to imprve torque is improve VE.

The less restrictions the greater the VE to a point 'cause gas speed and other factors come into play, but as long as its not too big the more choke the more torque.

34mm would be my choice on an 1.6 with improved gas flow. (xu10)

Std cam makes peak power at around 6300-6700 with carbs, so 32mm might strangle it a bit.

I have not seen much gain from 36mm chokes in fact, I find them a hazard in 40 DCOE carbs. Due to reduced fuel signal.

Its a complex subject, and not 1 that can be explained in simple posts of what jets should I use.

You need help in the form of wide band lambda readers rolling roads and people who know what they are doing.

I see no problem with the set up you have if the airs are in fact 185. If not thats where I would start the changes.

This will get it running, then it needs fine tuning, in the good old days when cars had these as std fitments it took days of testing to get it right, so don't expect it to be easy.

ye, i thought 135 was wrong because i dont even think they make it in that size, so must be worn off on the 3. lol.

ok, so as long as its roughly right, just to run it in thats fine, then i can get it rolling roaded, and tuned properly.

cheers

As I recall Sam is running 36mm chokes on his 1.6.

I have 34mm on my 1.3 TU

ok, well i think the settings i have got at the moment, will be fine just for the time being, to run the car in, then i will get it rolling roaded at some point.

cheers

And they are a little large at that!! I'll try and dig out my standard jetting as it may help a few people.

ye cheers,

just double checked an the air corrector jet is definatly 135?????????????????????????????????????

i have been told this is what my emulsion tube is

"Tubes with many orifices for high rpm mixture

richness reductions when air bleed jet is larger than 2.00mm".

;) I'm not going to hate you because you done your car a certain way mate, I'm not that harsh!! I actually like some 309's ;)

I think you are best off starting with Taffy's settings, hes been doing it a while.

so does everyone recon get 180 air corrector jets, and then it will run ok to begin with, before i get it rolling roaded.

If you have the following in it

32mm Chokes

Air Corrector Jets = 135

Emulsion Tubes = F49

Main Jets = 140

Idling Jets = 55F8

Pump Jets = 40

Then you would normally have as a starting point

32mm chokes

130 mains

180 airs

f9 emulsion tubes

45f9 idle jets

40 pump jets

So apart from the emulsion tubes and airs it should be ok to run. never used a f49 so i am not sure what effect it will have and i dont have 1 to hand.

f49 = "Tubes with many orifices for high rpm mixture

richness reductions when air bleed jet is larger than 2.00mm".

so not perfect.

do you think it will just run ok on this, if i just put 180 air correctors on.

cheers
