Timing belt rubbing

Recommended Posts

I have just changed the timing belt, tensioner and water pump on my 1.9 8v engine and the timing belt is rubbing on one of the plastic covers.

The covers were replaced with new Baker BM ones during the belt change and it looks like the rear cover is the culprit.

i switched back to the old cover as it was still in good condition but this one is also rubbing against the belt. I have stripped it several times and used emery cloth to rub down the old cover to give it some room and it has improved but still rubbing when I rev it and it’s settling back at idle.

The timing belt kit is a Gates one and identical to the ones removed.

Has anyone experienced this before and have any idea what the issue can be?

either the cover is not fitted properly or there is something making the belt run too close, how is it sitting on the cam pulley?

The belt is sitting dead centre on the cam sprocket and very slightly recessed on the crank sprocket. I fitted it as close to the edge on the crank sprocket as I could.

i even pulled the water pump again to see if the smear of sealant from the first attempt was pushing the water pump out.

My next plan is to dress the old cover again with emery but it’s the same cover from the last belt that didn’t rub.
