XU10 bearing shells

I was thinking about maybe different coating or hardness of those HDI only shells .

They are for DW10TD , same crank as XU7TE , so it says "steel" .

DW10ATED with the XUD9TE crank being "burnished steel" so seem like surface treated/polished journals , wich i guess means the DW10TD / XU7TE will have more "coarse" finish on the journals ..

Neither matters much if the crank never touches the shells of course ..

As for the size , they "seem" thicker .

Will see when i get them , if nothing maybe one shell will be useful to combine with the other set to make it right clearance .

Will send mail to both King an Mahle about those shells being made based on the wrong clearance spec .. doubt they'll do anything about it but worth a try at least .

Not as much petrol XU10 engines being rebuilt these days i guess , but i'd say there is diesel HDI's as there's quite a bit of those still driving around with very high mileage so in a need to be rebuild sooner or later .. and not many people/mechanics measure crank bearing clearances .

I wish I owned a ball end micrometer, so I could measure them properly before installation. I'm off to Tasmania next month for a holiday. I think I'll take a selection of shells with me and visit ACL in person.

True , measuring them with verniers or a standard multipurpose multimeter is a pain and just does not work !

Seems like everyone does them in the thinnest combination of 0113H7 + 0113H2 shells .
So black + blue, 1.847 + 1.844mm or around that figure , and on the basis of the old clearance spec .

Forged or CI, the clearance is identical. The plot is thickening however. ACL lists 5M1677A for DW10 and DW12 as well. In their cataloque, they specify a max thickness of 1.845mm, but not a minimum thickness, which would be more helpful.

PSA made some 8v DW12 with the 0113.93 bearings so technically you can sell the exact same parts for XU10/XUD/DW10/DW12.

Big end or mains ?

If they're the mains , then they'll be the same messed up measure like the lot we discussed about above .. they all give wrong bearing clearance .

Big ends.

Tried those HDI Mahle shells , "slighty" better but still no good ..

Those end up 0.063mm , so in a pinch they might be better than the previous set .

Those came in red box made in Slovakia ..

They seem to have coating on the sliding surface , very similar to what Glyco often uses on they're bearing shells , kinda foggy/milky overlay ..

So , off into the trash can with the lot of the new ones , and will reuse the old shells as nothing from the aftermarket seems to work ..

Now your last hope is to get newer DW bearings directly from Peugeot/Citroën or even Ford.

No ! Im done , enough of this "shell fetish" for me !!

Will reuse the old ones , if they're survived +30 years i guess they will 10-15 years more ..

Only option is using combine new top shells and used lower , but not sure if that might be good idea or better not .. never tried that yet .

Haven't tried big end shells till now , bought also King , they look poorly cheaply made .. and locating tabs on the shells are over the place except in the center so would need to play with the lot of them and hand center each one and/or grind the locating tabs off some of them  ... haven't even checked the clearances just couldnt be arsed , ordered Glyco shells instead as these ones look rough ..

And found one additional/extra expander ring in one of the pistons ring packages !

I always use the ACL Race Series big end shells, 4B7700H. They're extremely well made and a few different sizes.

Very few places here sell ACL bearings , so not very common brand , and a bit hard to find .

Will see how those Glyco look like , I hope they'll be ok.
