BE3 release bearing

Hello,

I am swaping my be1 for a be3 (no marking, so not sure of the provenance, it has been sold to me as a 1.6 gti be3).

The be3 release bearing that i bought doesn't fit :

 

Did I order the wrong part ? Or have I the wrong fork/box.

 

Thank you for your advice, I can t fond a picture of a be3 release bearing mount on his fork.

by the look of the clutch fork that is a pull clutch fork from something like an XU10 or XUD9TE, the bearing looks correct though check its overall height as there is a variance.

 

you will need a push type arm and fork, you can get kits of arm fork and pin,  beware that some of them have incorrect pairs of bushes, even being the same colour.

Thank you for your fast answer. Il look like I don't have a 1.6 short ratio box... To limit my cost, can I switch the fork from my BE1 box? It seems a bit different (the car is one hour away so I can't check by my self).

A gearbox that originally had a pull fork should also have a "R" bellhousing (1b) not the BE1/BE3 bellhousing (1a) with the opening for the BE1 fork that you can find on a 1.6 gearbox :

You should probably start by removing the diff cover to check what final drive you have (16x65 for a 1.6) and the 5th gear cover to see what gearset you're likely to have (37x32 5th gear for a GTI).

look for a code etched into the casing just below where the clutch cable attaches to a BE3 arm, its upside down and will be a 6 number/letter code such as 20TE47 or similar.

 

or take the diff cover off and check the gear ratio there also.

 

if it is from a  306 or 405 or 406 even, the mounting stud will be quite different to a 205, not having the shoulder for the Bush to clamp down on and being much longer.

 

 

also, the top gear selector will be cranked upwards rather than flat.

Thanks again for all the answers. I will probably not be able to check for a few weeks, but I took a picture of the gearbox. I took of the dirty one and the weird one is on the left.

 

 

Hard to say for the mounting stud, and I don t know what to look on the top gear selector.

 

I'll check the code next time, and worst case scénario I'll open like you suggest.

The 204142 ref is Ok according to miamistu, but the picture is quite différent :

 

 

Of you have any advice... I am looking at be3 box from a xu7 Xsara, really cheap as an alternative, instead of fighting with a box from an unknow origine. I ll wait to check what you suggest and décidé from here

the box looks like a 306 or xsara one, the elecronix speedo sensor is a giveaway, as is the top selector arm, you can see its different to yours on the right.

 

the mounting pin is the correct 205 one however,     also your gearbox on the right is missing the large washer under the pin.

 

 

the image on miamistu is showing a BE1 205 style bearing, I wouldn't worry about this as images dont always match the supplied part,   what you have looks correct.

an XU7 xsara box may be a decent choice, you will still need to change the speedometer drive for a 205 one, the top selector arm for a 205 one, and the mounting pin,    the clutch fork and arm will be the correct style for a push clutch though.
