GTi6 Cambelt

Recommended Posts

Rallyace

I recently bought a GTi6, from which I’ve taken the engine. Before fitting it to my 205 rally car, I want to change the water pump and Cambelt. The engine is fitted with Kent Cams vernier pulleys and a Spoox Motorsport bottom pulley. The aluminium pull has a hole in, so I’m sure that it can be used to position the crank correctly. I want the cam pulleys to be in the middle of their possible adjustment, in order that the engine tuner can tweak the cam timing if necessary. What’s the procedure for locking the cams in the correct position and tensioning the Cambelt correctly?

TIA

with those cam pulleys there is no provision to pin the timing, your best bet is to put paint marks on the cover and sprockets, pin the bottom end and change the belt and pulleys,   leave the cams where they are.

without specialist tools I wouldn't touch the cam timing if its a running engine.

The original pulleys are also vernier pulleys and tensioning the belt will make them move a bit so you are unlikely to get them both right in the middle without a dual tensioner setup like the one on the S16 (ACAV) engine.

Unfortunately the cam cover isn’t on the engine. I have the parts and will reinstall it when I do the Cambelt. I certainly won’t the car/engine without the Cambelt being fully protected. All of my experience is with the 8v engine, so learning as I go. I’m perhaps going to have to find a way of locking the cams so that I can remove the verniers to fit the back of the cam cover. Any thoughts on how to achieve it. The engine is on an engine stand, so access to everything is as good as it gets.
