Hi Guys. Need help again. Car won’t start. Have got a spark checker and there is no spark from the coil. The coil has power, but there is a very bad path to earth on it. I can’t get voltage across the coil with ignition on. I have traced the earth back to the ignition module under the coil. There is good earth to pin 2, and good earth from pin 1 to coil earth. When I plug the module back in, the resistance to battery negative terminal is 2.16kohms. Is this right?  Any help would be appreciated. Checked coil primary windings and they are 0.8ohms. Secondary winding is 7.5kohm.

Just looking through the Haynes wiring diagrams. I think the wire I am checking back to the ignition module is numbered 2. This is the chunky yellow and green wire at the bottom of the picture below.  I am looking for wire 141 which goes to earth. Any idea which one it is?  Is it wired into the same connector as the one to the ignition module, or is it the other connector?  Unfortunately I can’t see the numbers on the wires.

A bit more history would probably help here. Has the car previously ran ok then suddenly will not run? I’d have to double check a wiring diagram,  but I don’t think the coil should have a direct earth.  By earthing the coil via the ign module, is what makes the coil spark.

Thanks for getting back. I have my head in wiring diagrams as we speak. Yes it ran before Christmas but didn’t run after. I thought my it was the fuel relay as I had no power to the pump. Realised it was not getting pulse from coil, so waggled the negative connection and it fired. Been fine for a few weeks, but tried it again Saturday and no spark again. I live near the sea, so assumed contacts corroded on coil. Cleaned everything up at weekend, but still no spark. Got confused about earth and as you say it doesn’t look like it has a direct earth to battery. I have had a thought, as I removed the dizzy cap and tried to check continuity, but too much resistance in ignition leads. The spring loaded contact that touches the rotor arm was sticking in, so maybe it isn’t contacting. I haven’t had time to check if I have power to fuel pump. If I have, that proves connection good to coil. It’s a right pain.

As a mate of mine says. Fix the things you know about first, In this case a new dizzy cap first.

You could test further by rigging up a HT lead and a plug direct from the coil and earthed to the head and see if you get a spark.

Thanks. I’ll give it a go and let you know if it’s successful. I might have been chasing my tail so far.

Thanks for the help. Must have been the button in the dizzy. Good spark and took it round the block a few times.
