Prepping engine bay for paint.

Recommended Posts

Gavin Waddell

I am in  the process of prepping  the engine bay for a respray as it was getting  a bit tatty and wanted to freshen it up as I  am also putting a 1.9 (cars originally a 1.6).

I have some experience with painting and prep but mainly on sailing boats ( imoca 60s, americas cup boats and a few other interesting projects).

I have sanded the bay,  I haven't taken it back to bare metal. I have welded a few holes that I had drilled previously and treated some surface rust.

I am now at the stage of going to lay down some primer, this is where I am a bit unsure of how to proceed.

I was originally going to epoxy the whole bay then filler primer on top and then top coat? As the original paint isn't that bad and the the car is a 91 plate so it was galvanised at the factory.

Or should I just epoxy the spots that  have bare metalt showing and then filler primer?

I know that I can do a wet on wet with the epoxy and filler primer that way it cuts out a sanding step.

What do you guys think?

Thanks Gavin

Unless you have all the safety gear, I would leave the 2K stuff to a pro. It's just not worth the risk.

To answer your question, don't mix. Start with 2K, finish with 2K.

I have all the safety gear sperm suits and the adequate safety mask and filters( i work in the composites industry).

The reason for wanting to use epoxy is it's protective quality on the bare metal.

Id epoxy the whole bay as a barrier against rust , then fill any bits you need to,  then primer and topcoat .
