Knock sensor frequency

Recommended Posts

Richie-Van-GTi

I need to get the knock sensor set up correctly or replaced on my car.

Im using a knock sensor from an XU10J4R engine on my XU5JA. I run an adaptronic ECU and need to set up the correct frequency. Not something I have come across before, does anyone have any idea what kind of values I should be using, I was led to believe it is a calculation based on bore, stroke and compression ratios but cant find any real info about this?

No idea, but I know who does. Join Guild of EFI Tuners FB group. Ask the same question and tag Andy Wyatt. He was the guru of Adaptronic before Haltech bought them out. He now works for Haltech. The R5 and R3 are his masterpieces which would have been Adaptronic products.

Don't forgot to add to the post that you will be measuring the knock on the 3rd crank bearing cap and not on the block near the fire ring.

Thank you, I've done a join request, always wondered what Andy is doing now.

Found a picture of the engine, circled where the map sensor is mounted. @Thijs_Rallye is this where you meant?

Thijs is referring to the XU9J4 knock sensor postion on a special bolt (8) on the the 3rd bearing cap:

What you have here is more like the XU7JP4 setup but the XU5 block lacks the proper mounting point, they have it closer to the headblot thread:

As Baptiste said :). Interesting to see they've adapted the casting for the XU7.

I’d use an XU9J4Z #3 cap bolt.

08 0132 32 01 SCREW COLUMN
- INJECTION XU9J4 UP TO 10/1990

  0132 34 01
- INJECTION XU9J4 SINCE 10/1990

It should fit just the same on a XU5 block... if you can get your hands on one.

It wasn't even used on all XU9J4, only those with 55 pin ECU so all cat engines and also non cat since MY 91.

I may have a few, or know where to find one. Every 1.9L Mi16 sold in Australia had one. I can't look until after 16 Dec however.

I used one recently on a turbo 8V I built.

Easy enough to make one too, if you have a lathe.

@petert Weren't these just regular-ish M8 standoffs like in the picture? I haven't seen one in ages irl though, so I can't remember. If it looks like the one on the right I could find a similar DAF partnumber.

It's a bit taller, the screw that is replaced is a H8x35mm one with 1.25mm threads and 8.8 grade.
