Hi

new to the site, thanks for having me. 
quick question….on the 1.9 gti XU engine, what actually drives the oil pump? Is it centrifugal force?

It's external gear type and chain driven from the crank.

Thanks for that, I have it stripped out and as far as I see the sprocket for the chain can spin freely on the shaft and the carbon bushing has a woodruff key in it, however there is no physical connection between the bush and the sprocket.

Yes, it's a bad design. There's a slot for a woodruff key, but no matching slot in the oil pump sprocket. It just relies on the large bolt on the end of the crank being done up tightly to clamp everything down, and friction holds the sprocket in place so it turns with the crank.
