I removed the scuttle panel last week and noticed a big hole with no mesh and or filter leading to the heater matrix / blower motor.

Should there be a filter or something else here?

I thought so. Thank you for confirming. 

I will see if its is possible to fit a filter and a mesh screen for the top of it.
