205 brake lights not working

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Thanks for all the help so far. The car is getting better.

New belts, new plugs, new HT leads, new front brake pads and disks, new OSF bearing, managed to get the drivers door to open and close and lock.

The next challenge. The brake lights and reversing light don't work.

All other lights do

Things I've checked.

Power to the brake light switch. This is okay.

The brake light switch, no continuity when not engaged, continuity when the pedal is depressed.

The bulbs are fine. No power to the bulb for brake but bulb lights up for normal lights.

Does the brake light and normal lights share the same fuse?

It's odd the reversing lights do not work as well. I'm not so worried about these now but it would be good to fix them.

Any suggestions into the brake lights?

Cheers

check fuses, bulbs and earths

sounds as though you've checked the two former, now check the last

your rear lights earth point is a multi earth, located just next to the left rear tail light

give it a good inspection, clean out and dialectric grease if you have it

(and recommend doing the same to the ones in the engine bay while you're at it, especially those just next to headlights)

the reverse light sensor is located in a plug in your gearbox (no 7 in the pic, if yours is a BE3 transmission)

at least one of mine has failed in the past but they're easy to source and replace if needed

Thanks, just checked the fuse and cleaned it up. Looks like it's fuse 3, the brake lights are now working. Love an easy fix. Will tidy up the earth as well.

There are a lot of corroded connections in this car...

The reverse switch, cheers, found it in/on the gear box, 2 weird leading into it.

Will check for power to it and potentially replace.

As ever this site provides.

Cheers
