FWIW, I always took a nice and gentle "slipping it into 1st with a generously slow portion of heel'n'toe" approach... don't fight the synchros basically ;). Even with the needle roller.

As I run a circuit race car, 1st is only used getting off the line so not a big deal.

 

I should say selecting 1st was not an issue when I first fitted the box, but the something failed at some point causing the original bearing to melt:

It's now an showing as an issue after the rebuild. Might be a completely unrelated issue, but box will probably have to come apart again at some point to figure out the cause.
