Brake Upgrade check

Recommended Posts

Gohn

the standard non ventilated SI brakes just never seem to pull the car up as they should

specially considering its such a light car

so thinking of making use of a set of girling calipers that've been sittin in a box since being inherited a while back

the upgrade planned is as follows:

1. girling caliper pictured

plus

2. with 1.9GTI ventilated 247x20mm disk pictured

plus

3. base model (SI) hubs (on base model hub carrier)

the welshpug tech notes cover it all,  so just wanted to double check Ive got it right

that'll work wont it?

Yes, that'll all fit & work fine.

Apart from the girling caliper, it's what was fitted to the UK STDT model (they had the bendix 1.6 GTI calipers, 1.9 vented discs & base model hubs).

also, on another set of brakes which are bendix..

the part numbered 3 called the STOP PLATE looks a little bit torqued

they aren't twisted badly, just not straight as when I put the brakes together

what do they do ?

should I replace them or is a little bit of bending normal during operation ?

they stop the pads falling out..

you can get a kit of new ones and springs and clips.

That's item #2 not #3 which Andy asked about.

I don't know the exact purpose of the stop plate, they twist as you torque the caliper mounting bolts up.

You need different bolts to use the Girling calipers and they don't have the stop plates but I've hammered them flat again & reused them before on bendix calipers.

Stop plate is to stop the bolts working loose. If its not there the bolt is bearing on the slider tube which is free to turn and won't resist the bolt head turning against it. With the stop plate there the bolt head is trying to turn but the stop plate resists this hence helps to stop the bolts working loose.

Not needed on the Girling caliper as the bolt head is trying to twist on the caliper lugs which won't move.

got another couple about the FRONT calipers ..

(Im upgrading with the Girling set above so this is not holding up repairs or anything, just out of interest)

okay, so according to the part catalog there are

4 BENDIX caliper types (base model and 3 others, DTurbo/1.6GTI etc ) and

2 GIRLING caliper types (base model and the 1.9GTI)

and all of the calipers fit all of the hubs don't they ?

have the same bolt on dimension I mean

so you wouldn't want to use a base model caliper on a 1.6GTI or 1.9GTI, but it would actually fit ?

and also, do all of the calipers take both the base model single disc and the GTI vented discs ?

or is that why they put a different Bendix caliper on the 1.6GTI/Dturbo which have vented disks, because the base model caliper's only for single disc ?

You're making it harder than it needs to be. You can fit any caliper/disc combination from a DKZ/D6B 205 GTi, 306 or 206. What you can't use is a caliper/disc from a DFZ GTi.

in theory there may be that many calipers, in my experience there's only 3, 2 bendix and one girling

All calipers fit all hub carriers as long as there is no disc, 1.6 hubs need  1.6 discs and vented discs need vented calipers.

Also 1.9 calipers won't clear 14" 1.6 alloys without a bit of grinding, 1.6 calipers wont clear 13" "sport" steel wheels and that's why Dturbos with vented discs have lame wheel covers.

Peter won't DFZ GTI calipers work on a standard hub as long as you're using 1.9 vented discs?

grinding !  what !?

had not considered the 1.9GTI girling caliper could bang into the 14" pepperpot rims

pffft, there goes my plan

thanks for the tips

Maybe it won't bang, Speedline and SNR pepperpot arn't exactly the same on the inside. Also you don't need to grind that much.

You could also use spacers.

thanks baptiste,

worth a try eh

getting a set of used vented disks next week so I'll do proper test fit then

see if the calipers rub on the wheels

if that works I'll fit some new girling pads and be rollin

I can't remember wich ones it was and by the time I had the other kind on winter tyres the probem had long been solved.

I'ts the caliper yoke that is rubbing near the center of the wheel.

From what I recall, Speedline made 1.6 GTI alloys will clear a 1.9 caliper, whereas SMR ones are liable to foul when used with a 1.9/base model offset hub - both are fine on the wider 1.6 GTi offset hub.
