Finding a new rear axle

A none GTI axle tube can be used to build a GTI axle into without any problems .

Small engined 205 axle tubes are often in better condition, i think because the springs are lighter and the axle moves a lot more keeping it from seizing and distributing the wear in a wider area.

That may help to some extent, but even the non-GTI's are extremely rare

Time to take your own apart and see what state it's in and work from there , it may well be serviceable. Mine seemed ok when I had a brief check for movement  but I will probably take it apart when the time comes as the car has been offroad at least 15 years now

I agree, it’s pointless worrying about something that may not even be an issue....

Yes, you might be right. But we are talking about a 34 year old, rusty, ceased, unserviced rear axle (possibly with a damaged stub axle). Even with four new bearings, I believe that the axle will never be in perfect condition. Of course I do now know the actual condition but I have my realistic thoughts.
