Metal finishers - terminology

Recommended Posts

I'm sorting out a pile of bits to take to the metal finishers to be refurbished.

So I don't look daft (more than I normally do :) ), what do I need to ask them?

I know the bits I want silver, certain nuts, bolts, washers, etc. and the ones gold, such as the PAS reservoir mount, heater pipe bulkhead surround, fuel filler clasp, etc.

Here's what I think..... I would like them zinc coating(?) for the silver

and zinc coating with yellow passivate for the ones I want gold?

There's also other options such as Tin or Nickel, any benefits to using these methods instead?

They also provide chrome, while this would look nice, I want to go down the original route.

Thanks!

I think you're about right. You could get round it by asking them to replicate the original finish, to a better standard. You can buy electroplating kits to do it yourself, which saves the usual "professional" approach, which is lo some how lose small parts. So if you proceed, take photos of everything and provide the plater with a detailed list. In addition, I was advised that nickel-zinc gives a more durable finish than zinc.
