1.9 Box with 306 TD Final drive

Recommended Posts

Daniel306

Finding my gearbox is far too short, At 70mph its at approximately 4000 rpm. I was reading that the Final drive from the TD works well with the 1.9 gears and a 2.0 Turbo

Has anyone done it, what Rpm would it be at 70?

I think the current final in mine is 4.05

Top Gear gives 17.314 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 112.544 MPH at 6500 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
    30 MPH = 1733 RPM   40 MPH = 2310 RPM   50 MPH = 2888 RPM   60 MPH = 3465 RPM
    70 MPH = 4043 RPM   80 MPH = 4620 RPM   90 MPH = 5198 RPM  100 MPH = 5776 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 40.009 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4667 RPM dropping 1833 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 55.719 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 4856 RPM dropping 1644 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 74.587 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5145 RPM dropping 1355 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 94.230 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 5442 RPM dropping 1058 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 112.544 MPH

4.05 is shorter than the 1.9's 3.69,  1.6 is 4.06

If yours is doing 4k at 70 then its not a 1.9 box, it should be 3331rpm, 1.6 is 3665rpm @ 70 on 195 50 15.

Iv got a Quaife QKE5H gearset and from that ratio's and my speed vs RPM iv worked out it must be a 4.05 final. 3.69 ratio would be 3664rpm at 70mph with this gearset,  What ratio is the  306TD final?

I was hoping they Would be about 3.6, Is there anything else that uses a low ratio?

There is a 3.69 Cpw on ebay but was thinking it's a bit much at 150£ ?

It's 16x63/19x75 or 19x77 for the 306 1.9 td and 19x70 for the HDI.

Take note that since early 2000 BE3 secondary shafts are BE4 ones :

Quote

• Suitable for BE3 with or without Quaife final drive. BE4 must use Quaife final drive

So there all about 3.9-4.   Looks the best option for me is the original 1.9 3.69fd

HDI is close tho at 3.68, Il keep a lookout for one in the scrap yard

You can find a 19x63 on a BE4 but again it won't fit your gearset.

Just striped the box out, it's a 19x79, 4.15. That will be why I'm finding it too short

Completely unhelpful but researched this a lot when I put a 1.8d final drive on a GTI gearset as it was slightly longer legged than a 1.9 box. Again sorry can’t remember the actual ratios but it’s a nice set up for my rotrex GTI6 205.

3.94 is the best all round ratio for a 1.9.
