Fast and irregular tickover problem

I have a 1996 205 1600 petrol car (single point fuel injection) with a tickover problem - it's fast and irregular. It's been suggested it may be a problem with the idle air control valve (stepper motor) and it may be possible to dismantle and clean the valve. Does anyone have experience of this, please?
