M7 bolts for thermostat / dizzy housing

Recommended Posts

Bassman

Hi,

Finally getting around to putting my GTi back together after having the head welded and skimmed (last year!).

When I removed the housing for the dizzy / thermostat, I had snapped one of the M7 hex head bolts.  There are also two others that are pretty rusty as well that I would like to replace.

The problem is that finding a fully threaded M7 (1.0mm pitch) that is 55 or 75mm in length is seemingly impossible.  I have ordered a 60mm bolt to replace the snapped one, but no one seems to have anything longer than 70mm in stock.  I have tried fastener suppliers and online.

Pug obviously don’t make them anymore so they can’t help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rob

I use Imperial threaded cap head allen screws with a long plain shank, they are a similar diameter and I run an M7 die nut up them.

Its not like they are anything to do with highly stressed parts.

I cant remember what size they are without checking, probably BSF or cycle thread. I inherited them from a British bike business.

Yes, I bought a 60mm from them to replace the broken 55mm which I fitted today.

There is only around 10mm of the bolt going into the head, so I would rather have a full 75mm.

I have an M7 die on its way so will clean up the other two bolts and refit.

Why do Pug have to use such odd fasteners!  Thanks for all the advice.

Because they're French ?...

Been running French stuff for nigh on 30 years now and am still cursing them.  They're not alone though - deepened a sump some years ago and ended up using some Volvo bolts for the extended pickup - they were M7 too but longer than the OE ones.

The French think the British are odd! Who puts two sizes on one spanner?

I sourced a few of the bolts from abroad from dealers

They were particularly expensive on the RRP
