Battery?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

which battery would you buy for a track only 205 ?

Lithium seems attractive due to the low weight.

How little Ah and starting power is enough?

Would an MC battery with 16Ah and 250 (en) coldstart capacity be enough? Or Could I Go as low as 6 Ah, 90 (EN) ?

Thanks. Any pointers appreciated.

I experimented with a 5.5Ah 350A lithium battery, it started my Mi16 very well twice in a row and just about managed to start it a third time but that was all it could do.

16aH / 250A sounds like it might be about right though. Out of interest what size/weight is that?

Thanks for your input.

They vary a bit. About 1.8 kg. 150x140x80 ish.

I think the weight could be a pretty good insight into the performance as the lithium ion chemistry/density isn't going to vary much.

The 5.5aH / 350A one I tried weighed 1000g so 16aH from 1800g might be a bit exaggerated.

I've got one that is LiFePO4, Lithium Iron Phosphate.

It's listed as approx 16Ah lead equivalent, 700CCA starting capacity. 1.7kg.

It will start my EW10JS engine repeatedly without any issue (not high comp).

Very please with the performance, the CCA is probably overstated. It's slightly smaller than an Odyssey 680, but much lighter.

Talked to a specialist today. He Said that the Cranking power is important not the Ah. He recommended a 8Ah, 450 cca to be more than enough!?

I'd say they're both important in their own way. The cranking power is how big an engine it will turn over and the Ah is how many times it will crank it. I think a Peugeot 4 cylinder starter uses less than 150A so all of these batteries have plenty of headroom when it comes to cranking amps.

8Ah doesn't sound like enough to me but it's possible that my 5.5Ah battery was an exaggerated figure so a genuine 8Ah battery might be OK.

Contact Allan McDonald @ A&G Motorcycles.

Allan supplies MSA approved lithium batteries to a lot of the hill climb and sprint competitors over on Uphillracers so should be able to give you advice.
