Oil Cloud For Two Minutes

Recommended Posts

toolie72

Start car-usual clattering etc

Take car down dual carriageway into town-get blue oil cloud that starts after two minutes and disappears?? after another two minutes

No smoke at idle (hot or cold), no smoke on way back up the dual carriageway??

Head reconned about 8 months ago (I fitted stem seals myself thou)

So I'm left thinking 1) sticky stem seal 2) manifold got oil in in and it sometimes sucks the top of it (no porn jokes please!) 3)sticky oil control ring

I have to say this appeared after a long constant throttle run on ordinary unleaded-seems suspicious

Anyone got thoughts on this? NB I am planning a bottom end rebuild but I'm struggling for a block (to do it at my old fart snail pace)

Check all the breathers are clear, the rubber hoses go soft and collapse.

Good call but alas no

Until the car is warm she is now a two stroke!!

Worse the longer it's lain so looks like some numpty ballsed up the stem seal (me) but strange as its been fine since last Christmas

But oil must be weeping past into cylinder (just not enough yet to do the "idle" cloud

Joy of joys

Normally if it's stem seals/guides you will end up with a cloud of smoke when you first start or have been on over run and go to accelerate, if it's smoking until warm that could be as Tom day said (but you ruled out) or worn rings.

Its worse when you coast downhill-give it a blip and hey presto a cloud

But as I say once it's warm it's gone

Have everything for a bottom end rebuild (so do head again) apart from a block as I gave it to dundy cos he needed one

Tsk always the way

Cars my daily so would prefer to build a short engine to drop in it

Are the valve guides replaced during the head recon ? and is the engine "noisy" ?

Steam seals , if bougt individually per piece out of proper sealed packing , tend to go bad pretty quick ..

Another thing , which i learned the hard way ! , if the bottom end is more than moderate "porous" (rings/liners) and you seal up just the top ie. the head with new stem seals , guides etc. the pressure will be greater towards the bottom end and it'll start burning oil/smoking

How much oil you're losing ?

Guides were done at head recon

Engine does have a ticking sound like a valveshim but again it's not always present-certainly no ominous sounds/knocks

It's not running out of oil but it is a crazy amount of blue smoke that comes out at first

I think next port of call is a) find my compression tester to check all values are about the same B) check valve clearances then rip head off to see wtf going on

AFTER trip to new York (keep wife happy)

Leak down test would be more accurate , if you have an air compressor can do the leak test with the compression tester hose just undo the valve from the hose end ..

What sort of shape is the oil filler /breather tower in? The spun metal baffling can choke up, oxidise and compact. I have removed this in the past, allowing vented oil and condensation into the plenum, getting pulled straight in rather than sitting trapped and having time to drain back down, I guess. (Was better with the cap undone)

A Stainless Steel coarse pan scourer makes an ideal (& cheap) replacement for inside the filler/breather tower.

Took it all apart and cleaned them both in a bucket of petrol a couple of weeks ago

Yesterday am took throttle body etc off and cleaned chamber out (not much oil-just enough to get on good tshirt!!)

Still the same down the dual carriageway

Get into town, little puffs-park car, come back an hour later,no smoke

Think a seals/valve stems picked up and is ok when warm

OR the run down the dual carriageway amplifies the smoke cloud I'd get driving through the town so I can see it

When I come back from hols I'll do head and see what's up

On an upside it'll be snowing up here before long so you won't see the smoke officer!

Update

New German valve guides (last Christmas) are away

Wtf- got spare head that’s in bits-it’s guides are better (swapped valves about in case it was valves)

Oh well, finish taking spare head apart and it’ll be getting a quick skim then swapped over

AT A DIFFERENT MACHINE SHOP

Was thinking of this thread this week when reading another article, albeit about 2 strokes. Because 2 strokes have oil introduced directly into fuel, some finds its way into the exhaust. Once the exhaust is hot enough, it smokes heavily until burned off. Seemed to fit your symptoms.

Haha my symptoms?!

No my symptoms are unprintable!!

Took spare head to different machine shop on Friday, he agreed guides were good, heads never been skimmed

Strangely he never tried to sell me any “extra” work

The quickest I can get it is this Friday

Busy place

Ive had this issue recently. Turned out to be blocked breathers forcing oil up and into the inlet. Worse on the motor way when you put your foot down. Meaning more pressure more oil.

The blockage was in the oil hose down near the block. Cleaned it out including the filler neck and all the screens. They were filthy. MThe screens/mesh are held together by a very small nail the runs theough the center across ways stopping them from unwinding. Unroll them and soak them. They come up like new. The car has never run better. Do this whilt the head is off. Will make it so easy to do.

PM me if you need to know how to take the whole filler apart, there a little knack to it.
