£165 For Classic Insurance - 205 Mi16

Recommended Posts

maturin23

Hi all,

Been away from the 'scene' for a while but I'm putting my 205 back on the road after an extended SORN period.

Plan is to sort out a few cosmetic niggles and then put her up for sale.

Just wanted to check if I'm getting a reasonable deal on insurance. First time I've got a 'classic' insurance quote.

Car is 205 GTI - standard on the outside with a few mods to the greasy stuff - 1.9 Mi16 engine, Xsara quick rack/Saxo electric pump, battery in the boot, Bilstein shocks, GTI 6 front springs, 309 rear beam.

I'm in my early 40s, nice rural location and the car is parked on my driveway.

Does £165 for max 2000 miles seem reasonable? Was a lot less that Sky quoted for standard insurance (£370 inc full NCB).

I didn't go for a classic policy as I use mine as much as I can, when on the road anyway!

£300 odd, standard policy, 8-10k miles.

sounds about the same price as mine, similar circumstances, mid life crisis machine, stored in the garage, 2000 miles a year.

I've just renewed with Footman James, standard 1.9 on a classic policy, 5000 miles per year, 4k agreed value, Dorset postcode, garaged, £200

Hi guys - nice to see you again!

Not been on here for ages - since I bought a 996 the car has been sat outside not getting driven and just making me feel guilty - hence the decision to sell.

Sounds like I've got a reasonable deal then - this was via Footman James.

Long time no speak Ian, hope that you're well.

That quote doesn't sound too unreasonable considering the 1.9 Mi16 engine and other modifications.

For what it's worth, I'm a little younger than you and I'm paying £119 FC for a standard 205 for 4k miles, not garaged and ~10 miles from you. That's through Lancaster insurance.

For comparison, Footman James were around £180 from memory for me.

Worth keeping in mind that if you're planning to sell within the next few months that you typically don't get much in the way of refunds if you cancel a classic policy.

Hi Anthony - all very well indeed thanks - hope the same for you.

I'm finally getting around to having the rebuilt front hubs fitted!

Too late RE the insurance - just paid :(

Nevermind, you'll probably find that you won't want to sell it once you get it back on the road - it'll be the Ying to the Pork's Yang.

If you need any pointers/advice or a hand with the hubs give me a shout :)

Hi Anthony

Many thanks - I've taken the car to Stags in Chilton Foliat to fit the hubs and get it through the MOT - but I might well need assistance for a few smaller jobs once the old girl is back.

Will be great to have the old girl driving without the self-steering hub - might keep her for a bit longer.

I've just insured a standard 1.9 which is garaged in west Wales for £127. Limited to 2000 miles with Footman James. Can't argue with that!

Welcome back!

We're a similar age; I pay a bit more than that but not much and my policy is limited to 3000.

Go for it!

How's the d bass?

Similar car/age to me too. First time I've gone for classic insurance and have been pleasantly surprised by how cheap the quotes are coming out at, compared with the likes of Greenlight. They quoted £240 whilst Lancaster, on a classic policy, quoted £140. Re what Anthony said about refunds, RH Specialist quoted me £177, but stated there was no cancelation fee and I'd be refunded, pro rata - might work out cheaper if you only want it insured for the summer, for instance.

Yep very pleased, seems same price for each car, normally insure 3 for 270 pounds total, doesn't use no claims either.... ☺

Hi,

£165 sounds very competitive to me especially with those modifications. I think you would struggle to get better.

Regards,

Dan.

I've just had my renewal through and reading through this makes me think that its not as cheap as i thought!

205, GTI'6 engine, 6 box, 309 beam/front end, koni's etc and ive taken out the cage and got back to full road trim - £303 f/c with HIC..

Looks like i need to have a ring around!

TIL i'm paying too much for my insurance. Think I pay ~£300 for a 1.9 with a few declared mods (which it doesn't have anymore!). I'm 32!

Sounds very similar to my spec / situ - the Mustang and truck are £90 each but the 205 and Golf cost £130 each.

I'll be having words with them come renewal time, but then I am a whipper-snapper at a mere 41..

Who did you go with for this please, I'm trying to find the best insurer for young drivers as a lot of classic insurers want you to be like 50.

I'm 20 in February ????

I suspect you're going to struggle getting classic insurance (or probably any sensibly priced insurance!) at 19 on a 205 GTi!

Most classic insurers seem to be either 21 or 25 as a minimum age in my experience.

When I first insured it it was like 1600 which believe it or not is really reasonable and this year it was about 1100. My diesel 306 is slightly higher actually.

This was all with admiral.

I'll have to update what my renewal is in march.
