If you just put bodies or carbs on don't expect a massive power increase. Maybe 10-15hp. The alloy Mi is pretty good as it is. Increased compression and cams needed along with bodies or carbs to really feel a big difference.

Oh and also, (pedant mode on)

This is a Webber

This is a Lloyd-Webber

But THIS is a Weber (one B only)

To be fair Weber is one of the most commonly misspelled words on car forums in my experience, second only to Dell'Orto. Or maybe carburetor/carburator/carburettor/carburetter (which is unforgivable given the four possible correct spellings.)

I got another 10bhp after adding Jenvey's, it also dialled out the lumpiness of the cams at idle.

It makes a terrific noise, on WOT I can be heard 2 miles away...............................

Guys I'm looking at both . The throttle bodies are a lot more in the long run , than carbs and more complex to set up , however don't need the maintenance of carbs ?

Unless there is a massive difference in fuel consumption and power out put I'm leaning towards the carbs 40's or 45's. What are your thoughts ? Thanks

its a massive difference in fuel usage, I know Sandy Brown's recent very high specification TU5 engine (230+bhp 1600) still does 40mpg, and pulls so hard from low and mid range.

My brother (calvinhorse) has a lightly tuned 8v on 45s, sounds amazing, goes well but does about 10mpg however you drive it.

I've got jenveys and they use fuel, more so when you want it to make that noise.

Throttle bodies aren't any more complex than carbs. Each has there own characteristics. I'm more biased to bodies.

They aren't cheap, ecu, mapping etc.

What else has been done to your engine?

Mine nothing it's in bits at the moment .

I have an alloy 1.9 mi16 that I will be doing a full rebuild on

My friend is going down the carb road and so was I ?

Iv been offered a set of body's jenvey 45's and piper cams for £600

They come with gti6 injectors and fuel rails ?

Snap them up.

You'll need an ECU and some other bits.....

It's set up to run rich/safe so does use loads of fuel.. It's well worth it tho! The sound and the spluttering make it more novel to drive.

After 2 years of weekend driving the carbs have never caused any reliability problems, it starts easy, ticks over nice.. I'm in no rush to change to throttle bodies

40s aren't big enough, you'll need 45s.

You have to remember with carbs a 45 isn't actually a 45mm opening as they have 'chokes' in them which essentially make them smaller.

Iv been told 40's are better bottom end power ?

The number of gurus who can tune carbs is also rapidly diminishing. Definitely a dying breed. I'd suggest support for tb's and ecu's is far more common and cheaper.

I wouldn't say cheaper, I had my carbs setup at Mikeanics in Congleton for £180 (4 hours labour and emulsion tubes) you can probably get a map done for that but it won't be a good one :D

Will 40's be big enough for the mi ,

I know 45's will give me more top end but there very hard to come by and expensive .
