84 Gti (Crusher Escapee)

this is a tread about my 84gti.

I bougt it as it was ready to go to the crusher...

i first saw this car at my part guy.

the left chassismember was bent, bearings of the engine gone and the papers where lost( frens car, allready 7years in Belgium allready but never imported) but it was a complete car with only 53000km done.

so i dicided i wanted it.

since he was asking to much to buy the whole car and i was not chure if the paperwerk would be possible to fix,

i bought it as a rolling shell, ready for the crusher...

since then

i got the papers done(6 months work at this point i had 2 months to get the car ready for my wedding)

straithened the chassis member

swapped engine, gearbox, levermechanism(form grey 87 115bhp donor)

rebuild a 309 drumbrake rear axle

swapped front setup for 1.9 gti to be able to tuck the pts rims under the arches

Brakes, discs, hubs, propshafts

mounted kw abjustables inoxline variant 2( height en stiffnes) and a omp strutbrace

also ditched the 3 brake line system for 4 brake line system, so i'm using no regulator on the drumbrakes....

and i love it.

this also allowes me to swap to discs in the rear without changing the brakelines again...

bought back Original door trim, speedo etc...

seats dash and carpet from donor gti

illuminated visors from a gentry due to dammaged originals...

painted some bumpers

rebuild front foglights

putted in the central locking system and the electric windows of the donor

slammed it all togheter to get it ready for MOT(just 2weeks for the wedding)

took my car to work (i'm an mot- inspector) and got it all settled thanx to my mate Kris who adjusted the drums a bit.

MOT done!

just got a hood sprayed in a nick of time...

and then week of wedding

monday get car licensed

thursday got my license plate

fryday take care of insurance

saterday 23th of may got MARRIED

after i got married...

i changed to double rear foglights

found some Original sprocet-hinges(ready to be mounted)

and mounted non-shrunken rear window seals with original 84 gti rear windwows

the 84 windows have no black border arround them.

so you have 2 kinds, 1 are clear windows for non-gti models and bronze tinted windows for gti models...

allso took me several months to fiend a good pair...

will upload some pictures as soon as i figure out how...

Great work - well saved !!

I remember dropping a rebuilt engine into my Mustang the week before my wedding - was a close call and took me ages to get my hands clean enough for the big day..

Congratulations.

things i've done lately...

sourced Original hood hinges from a pre 86 car in perfect condition.

most of them miss a few teeth...

and found the time to mount them.

I found the rear side tinted windows without the black outline on them.

specialy from gti from 84...

allso found non-shruncken rear side window rubbers and mounted these with the new rear windows.

an ugly site, as soon as you see it you realise why they made the black outline on it.

but it's rare and Original, so for the time being it stays this way...

I also bought an 309 turbo cup slingshot, for when i start the 125bhp engine build up.

Not gonna take any risks with this engine...

also found a an Original rear full engine mount.

and a automatic bonnet with only 1 bit of stoneshipping.

bought it from a guy who was putting his CTI back to Original.

Lucky me...

I also polished the car up a last time this year

and set it to rest in the garage for the winter.

starting to source the parts to rebuild the Original engine to 125bhp pts spec over the winther months...

hopefully being able to swap the engine by summertime...

this block being a bit tired(headgasket nearing the end).

little update:

my friend had an extra 1.6 115pk cilinder head, that i could have...

from this i'll be using the valves and camshaft, since they are identical to the 125bhp version.

special thank you for Kris Van Hooghten(ultra low grey gti on pls splitrims) for the head.

picked up a solid engine mount.

pulled the head of the original engine today.

did a few measurements, burning chamber is 1mm deeper on the 105bhp head...

will need to conform height of the head when the cam is removed.(measuring cambearing- buttom)

hopefully i'll be able to just skim the head, alltough i'm afraid that the distribution timing will be messed up...

don't now if a abjustable cam pulley will do the trick...

if not i'll be forst to change the appearence of the 115 head to that of the 105 head.

apart from depth the form of the burningchamber is different to, alltough this would be an easy modification grinding it down a bit...

on the 105 is has a straight ridge where the 115 is wider on the inlet side, to make room for the bigger valves...

got a little bit of work done yesterday.

disassembled the 105 bhp head ending up with 2 bear heads...

did the depth measurement again, this time the right way and they seem to be equaly deep.

this means i can proceed forward with moding the 105 bhp head :D

next up changing the combustion chamber chape and search somebody who can grind down the bigger valve seats...

on the pictures you have a clear seight in the differences of the heads...

the 105 head has a symetrical layout on top, where the 115 clearly doesn't.

allso the 105 head is more wider at the bottum rear( look at the headboltholes...)

will put them on the scales on of the days to see if one weighs more then the other.

got the head back after changing the valve seats to fit the bigger valves...

you can clearly see the bigger valveseatopening on the inlet side.

on outlet the duct is larger then the valve seat opening.

just spend 2h grinding the inlet duct to the size of the bigger valve seats, just to improve the flow a little.

no point of putting bigger valves in if the duct size isn't addepted to...

not making a race car, so no need for high performance polished ducts etc...
