You're stuck between a rock and hard place, in having a transaxle with an LSD. No friction modifier and your diff will be noisy. Too much friction modifier will spoil the sychros. I run approx. 40mL Redline friction modifier in mine and it's still noisy. Not game to add any more.

AMS: interesting how you say changing to total BV 75/80 did the job, what did you run before? I'm running the same grade but castrol EPX , which has clunks but only at low/very low speeds.

Matt

I originally used Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75-80 since it's compatible with Peugeot gearbox synchros. The shift felt super smooth and the LSD felt great with this stuff. The tradeoff was this oil makes the 3J LSD clatter and clunk a lot.

I then tried some Millers CRX LSD oil rated at 75-90 that I had lying around from a previous track car. The LSD operated well and the clunks reduced but shifting gears became a notchy affair particularly from cold. This confirmed what many on this forum say about using incompatible oils in Peugeot boxes. I quickly drained this horrible stuff.

I then switched to Total BV 75-80, this oil considerably quietened the LSD and shifting went back to being smooth however some occasional muted clunks still occurred, likely due to some of the above stuff being still in the gearbox.

I then had to change driveshafts so I went to Peugeot to pick up what is essentially the same stuff as Totals 75-80 (branded as "Peugeot 75-80"). The LSD operation then became completely and utterly silent.

I've since gone back to the Fuchs oil because (and this is subjective personal opinion) something just felt off during cornering with the Peugeot/Total 75-90, it felt like the clutch packs were not locking as early as I would like relative to the amount of throttle applied. It felt like the Pug/Total 75-80 effectively lowered the preload on the LSD to zero percent. I became a little concerned that the clutch packs were slipping too much and had possibly glazed, reducing the efficiency of the LSD. Also when performing Figure 8's I could feel the LSD lock earlier with less throttle on Fuchs 75-80 than when doing the same with the more slippy and silent Pug/Total 75-80. So I've gone full circle back to using Fuchs oil since it's offers smooth shifting, is compatible with Pug gearboxes and the LSD functions in a manner I prefer on the road - the tradeoff being loud clunking which I can live with.

Stef: since you bought the diff from Miles, maybe he could supply a suitable oil?

I got mine from Gripper directly, he suggested I used a Morris LSD specific oil, however this, I was told by a trusted box builder, would be bad for the synchros.
