jshep205gti 3 Posted January 8, 2015 Hello all, I am a former 205 GTI owner, but that was a few years ago now. I have not had an older "toy" car since. But that changed on Monday when I bought a GTI. I thought I would share on here, just because. It is the 16v 139bhp KR engine with twin Weber 45 carbs. And it is not very fast. I think my old 1.6 205 GTI seemed faster. The Golf is much bigger and heavier. But it does seem more planted on the road. Relatively speaking it is similar to my old 205 in that it is the same era. Basic engineering and similar handling. Can't wait to get stuck into it. J

Anthony 1,000 Posted January 8, 2015 Surprised that it feels slower than a 1.6 GTi - whilst certainly not quick by any modern standards, from what I remember of Mk2 16v's they're fairly brisk if you keep them on the boil. 12 years or so ago when I was first looking for a hot hatch it came down to either a 205 1.9 GTi or a Mk2 Golf GTI 16v - a lovely Helios Blue one from memory - but I chose the 205 and the rest is history (much like my sanity after 12 years of 205's ) Looks like a nice tidy example anyway - enjoy
jackherer 543 Posted January 8, 2015 It's nice enough I suppose but it needs to be more 'GTI', where are the badges and red bits?
jshep205gti 3 Posted January 8, 2015 It's nice enough I suppose but it needs to be more 'GTI', where are the badges and red bits? I've only just bought it. It will get the badges and red grille!
Leon 24 Posted January 10, 2015 It definitely shouldn't be or feel slower than a 1.6 205....

Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted January 11, 2015 Going from a 205 GTI to a Golf is also know as "middle age spread" It looks clean and will make some lovely noises too which is half of the fun as going fast isn't everything the older you get. I recently fell in love with a VW Up after flooring its 75 bhp 3cyl engine and thinking it sounded a little bit like a Stratos! (McDonalds toy of the rear tow eye going on this weekend? )
welshpug 1,621 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) should be 140 bhp on the k-jet iirc? (still, works better than bloody carbs ) helped bolt a 16v mk1 together recently, amused me seeing how mechanical and archaic the injection system seems compared to the stuff the 205 was equipped with. They're just about the ton mark so probably on a par with the pace of a 309 rather than a 205. Edited January 11, 2015 by welshpug

Telf 222 2 Cars Posted March 7, 2023 in my Youth I had a 205 GTI whilst most of my mates had Golfs, my missus found me a classy sticker for the boot 'I'd rather push a Pug than drive a Golf' I've never found a copy since Same still applies , nice car though.. Telf 222 2 Cars Posted March 7, 2023 Talking of GTI's I think my 207 is finally starting to die. Its using a lot of oil but not suffering any leaks. The exhaust is sooty and there is some oil sitting in the pipe so Im guessing I have a ring on the way out or a cylinder that is worn. Ill do a compression test at some point when the weather is a bit warmer, but has anyone rebuilt a 207 engine? I cant decide if its worth the effort or not! welshpug 1,621 Posted March 7, 2023 I believe the EP engines are known for cam cover breather valve failure leading to oil consumption, its part of the cam covers.
