Oil In Inlet Manifold

Recommended Posts

stumpyjag

Hi all, I am in the process of stripping a 1.6gti engine ancillaries before removing the head as it smokes at tickover when hot, I am hoping new valve seals will sort this. However I have just removed the throttle body to give a clean and noticed that the inlet manifold has literally a puddle of oil inside it.

Is this just down to leaky breather pipes, as I know I have a couple of split ones and will be getting a set from Baker, or could this be the actual cause of my smoking problem.

As usual many thanks.

they reuse wany oil vapour to ensure nothing inside the engine gets rusty, they do this by feeding it back into the inlet via one of the 90' airbox pipes :)

(either that or it is a way to burn off the old oil vapour, but I prefer to think it helps stop engines rust from the inside out)

Smoke on hot idle and overrun will be the stem seals - very common on 8v engines now if they haven't had a top end rebuild.

As above, regarding the oil in the inlet manifold, they all do this to a degree after 20+ years thanks to the breather system.

Clean as much out as you can, clean the throttle body and it'll be fine :)

If it's any consolation, it's FAR worse on many engines with EGR - the inlet on a typical HDi engine for example has literally half an inch of caked on sticky black gunge the entire way around the inside of the inlet elbow and manifold.
