Cam Cap Question

Just received my reworked head back from the machine shop.

 

The only issue they reported was one of the cam caps was knackered, as I have several spare heads around, I said I would replace this.

 

Have tried 5 sets and they are all too small

 

5 of the cam caps are this size

and the ones fitted to the new head are like this

I believe all the other heads are also 1.9, but not sure of the ages of them.

 

So am I missing something..... :huh:

 

Not sure if it makes any difference but the missing cap is cap 2

welshpug

cam caps are line bored in situ, therefore should not be swapped around as they are unique to that casting.

what specifically made the cap knackered? is it broken or just a damaged bearing surface?

He said it was out of shape

Just measured the 5 cams I have here..
Journal 2

 

3 are 28.4 (including new piper cam) and 2 are 27.4

They aren't interchangeable, you need a new head or fix that cam cap.

Take it to a machine shop and get it line bored.

 

Failing that get another head, a pain I know.

Pain is not the word just had it skimmed, new guides and valves, seats reground, corrosion fixed, aqua blasted........

 

If I get another cap, can I get it machined to fit the profile of the cam/seat??

I cant see why not.A good machine shop which specialises in engines would be my first call.

Its by no means a total loss here.

 

Speak to them about your problem and take your head along to see them.And I bet they will find a solution.

Not close to you I know,but as an example,theese are the people that I turn to for that kind of help.They specialise in that kind of problem... http://www.hamlinsengineering.co.uk/

Never spotted this thread, I've posted in your wanted ad though ;)

 

You can probably utilise one of the ill fitting caps you've already got. Any decent machinist will be able to machine the split line of the cap then fit and re-bore the cap to the head.

I've had 8v heads line bored. It's easily done, unlike an Mi16 head.

For one cap you wouldn't need to line bore them, just carefully 'pick up' the bores and bore the cap.

Great guy's that gives me a lot of confidence.

 

Have not had a chance to talk with the machine shop today but I feel confidence when he knows my predicament he will sort it out.

 

Am a little concerned that he thought changing caps was acceptable.

 

Will let you know how I get on.

 

Thanks again as this is a massive issue after the hassle with the engine last time.
