Slightly unrelated I know, but is there a difference between the 1.6/1.9 driveshafts?

 

Guessing there is so I wanted to check.

 

I wanted to but two of these kits for my 1.9 but I am not sure

James they are different sizes, the 1.6 are staked and the 1.9 has an R clip

Should I be concerned that there was an r clip on the O/S with a retaining plate and not one on the N/S?

 

Or is it just common for the to go walk-abouts in the garage and people don't bother to replace them?

r clip and castellated cover is a 1.9 thing, though some aftermarket cv's have a staked nut on the 24mm threads, if they are r clip type with a missing clip that is technically an mot fail iirc! they can come loose even if they seem so tight they never would!

So it is possible that the N/S driveshaft has been replaced (120000 miles so I wouldn't be surprised) and the O/S is the original which is why it still has the r clip and the cover?

Yip, more likely the wheel bearing has been replaced and the new nut came with the kit, I got 2 different nuts in my last wheel bearing kit, just re-used the original nut, cover and r-pin even though I've heard your meant to replace the nut every time it comes off, can't think why though?

Well I am replacing both wheel bearings whilst the engine is out so I think I need to get on the bay for one of these castlated covers...

i think i should have a few of them yes, I do keep them if I ever take a shaft or hub off in a breakers :D

Just took the N/S hub off and the spline is different, it has the two cut outs for the modern style bolts.

 

Thank you very much for having a look welshpug but I will not need the r clip and cap
