Swapping/upgrading Door Locks

Recommended Posts

scbond

Just got my first 205 GTi 8 days ago and sadly someone has had a go at the passenger side door lock already. I noticed when I came to put the key in and struggled to get it in. It won't turn at all either. I can even pin-point when it likely happened and regret getting out to grab a drink in Stretford, Greater Manchester that day :(

Anyway, I tried searching as best I could about opening the locks and only daw a bit of information. Can a new lock be bought and opened so that I can set it to the current, original key? How easy is it to do if you can open it without destroying it?

Also, the incident has got me wondering about whether there are any methods of improving security, specifically on the locks. I want it to stay and appear standard vut also want to remove the possibility of the locks being pulled out with a screwdriver. I did see a mention of fitting a washer when I searched...can anyone explain that a bit more?

Thanks in advance!

You can't buy a new lock and use the original key.

Many 205s come with more than one key for this reason.

I had a silver 205 which had a key for the drivers door, one for the ignition and a different one for the glove box! some toe rag had obviously broken each lock to try and rob/steal the car at some point. I ended up buying a complete set of locks (3 doors, ignition, glove box, petrol cap) and replacing them all so they all worked on one and key.

Someone hammered my locks in too, I just got a set of 2nd hand locks cheap on here and fit them. Easy enough to change

If your really concerned you can blank off the locks and retro fit remote central locking >> like this << link

I have it fitted to mine, the solenoids are a direct fit to the 205 of any age, the bar links are a bit of a pain to cut/shape and fit and its very awkward to get your hands in the thin door internals.

Cheaper to buy the whole package than probably 1 fob for any other system.

Wiring is very stingy though you will need to extend most of it.

Definitely don't want to do any blanking off or smoothing over where the locks should be I'm afraid as it wouldn't keep it standard and it's just not something I like.

Edp, surely the replacement lock barrel can be set for my existing key? The main issue I can think of at the moment is if the replacement lock doesn't have enough of the correct tumblers. Even then I could just try and salvage any undamaged ones from the damaged lock.

I didn't mean smoothing I mean blanking off as in a big flat blank over the lock holes, a bit like a security cover on fords but with no keyhole. And I do mean a nice round stainless one too not some bodged up crap

Something similar to this that has a bolt on the back, just needs a wide washer on the inside and a nut

A painted one here on an escort, agreed it looks crap in this colour though

Ok cheers. Something worth considering. I was already planning on fitting an alarm and I guess this means I won't have to buy a new set of locks every week or so I guess.

Might try taking the lock out over the next week or so to see if I can open it without destroying it as I'd ultimately prefer to rebuild a new lock to my key.

Do you have a link? I tried searching just now but couldn't find anything.

For now the car is safely parking in a secure car park but from September it'll more than likely have to be parked on a street so I'd like to make it as secure as possible (alarm, steering lock/gearstick lock) as well as prevent hooligans attempting to pull the locks out and damage them in the process.

Nothing will stop them, have you seen how easy the doors bend?

Had mine for 8 years and not had issue with the locks, not a low mileage car either, but remote cl since 1991 helps ;)

Haha...yea I know they bend easily. I want to deter them as much as possible from even trying though. It'll street parked in Nottingham later this year and I'm currently fairly paranoid about it.

You should've seen the mess some **** made of my old 205 in Leicester a few years ago.

They tried smashing in a lock with a screwdriver, and that didn't work, so they jammed the screwdriver through the door next to the lock, and that didnt work either. So they tried to bend the door back, and must've been little girls because they couldn't manage that either. They then got tired and chucked a brick through the window so hard it dented the drivers door (it went in the passengers door).

If it makes you feel any more secure, that was in front of a cctv camera, in a carpark with 10 foot walls round it with somebody in the reception of the building 24/7 (about 40 feet from where the car was)

I wouldn't have been so annoyed if i hadn't left a very expensive pair of carbs locked in the boot.
