Main Bearing Arrangement

Recommended Posts

Kane

Hi,

I purchased a set of federal mogul main bearings off of ebay several months ago for my xu9j4 rebuild and set about putting the engine back together yesterday but in doing so noticed something rather strange.

I found that the pack I was supplied contained 4 plain bearings and 6 grooved. Initially I thought there must have been a mistake in the packaging but I managed to find information that says peugeot fiddled with the arrangement of their main bearings over the years and eventually settled on the equal 5 plain and 5 grooved.

Now does anyone know if it would be OK to fit my set (6 and 4) to the engine without it resulting in problems and if so what arrangement should they be put in at? My thought would be 5 grooved at the top as they match up with the holes in the block and then possibly the 6th grooved in the middle of the bottom with two plain ones on either side.

What's your thoughts?

Cheers

Kane

All my replacement bearings have been linke the ones you've got. No problem. However I can't remember how I sorted out the puzzle. Your idea sounds good.

Ah great, well that's a bit of a relief. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

I'm going to go have another look next week and see what looks the best fit but I'm hoping the positioning shouldn't matter a great deal as long as the oil holes in the block are not blocked.

Thanks for the help
