205Gti Tyre Bloodline

Recommended Posts

driversdomainuk

Hi

Restoring my 205 I am trying to make it as original as possible. Does anyone know what tyres were OE on the 1.9 in 1989?

I guess they would have discontinued these now, but is there a bloodline of tyre model I could follow to make sure I get as near as possible to what it came out the factory with?

Also 185 55 15 tyres do not appear to have a great selection, would it be easier to get 195 50 15's? Although maybe that would go against my plans with keeping it totally original..not sure...?

Thanks

Rob

I imagine they were michelin MXV or Pirelli P600 but I will check the brochure.

I run mine on Michelin Pilot Exalto 2 but these too have been superseded by the version 3

my original spare from 1989 was a Michelin MXV, as mentioned, current variant is the PS3.

I think they came with both. I have an original MXV on a spare and I had P600's on the back of my current gti

whatever Peugeot made a deal with for a bulk buy in that year I'd imagine.

Didn't know they made an MXV4, I had an MXV2 under my ZX.

MXV4 doesn't come in a small enough size.

Pilot 3 does - it is called Pilot Sport 3....(so near enough :)

Also I am sure I have seen Exalto or something similar?

there WAS a Pilot Exalto, which is LOOOOoonnggggg discontinued, Superseeded by the Pilot Exalto 2, which was superseded last year by the Pilot Sport 3.

The only current tyre in the correct 185 55 15 is the Energy Saver +, which does also come in a 195 50 and likely to be cheaper.

I reckon the pilot sport 3 are as good as you can get for the car then - in terms of original.

MXV P, P600 or the Goodyear Eagle, Mind most where MXV P's, Still got a set of these for mine thankfully, Bad when new so 20 years of going off and I hate to think what they will be like now, Most 309's had the Goodyears fitted which is why the label states them all

And P600's were utter turd.

They were nowhere near as good as that dude. Lethal ditchfinding cast-iron rubbish (also lasted forever- unfortunately).

P600's where good off road, not too bad on road in the day and going from the MXV P's which where almost solid rubber a good upgrade
