It's straight forward enough if you're competent with a spanner. Call it 3 spanners out of 5 if it were Haynes.

Only tools you'll need is a typical socket set, a torque wrench, thread lock, sealant, and a suitable bar and socket for the hub nuts.

Well worth buying a new set of crown wheel bolts in advance, as certainly on the OE diff, they're notorious for stripping on removal

Can be done with the engine in situ normally, although I'm not sure whether there is enough clearance to do so with a T16 as you have to swing the engine forward a little to gain enough clearance to remove the diff cover and diff. Dropping the subframe is another option if you don't want to remove the gearbox from the car.

Crown wheel needs swapping over regardless, as that matches the pinion inside the gearbox, the two parts together forming the final drive.

So lets make this simple as possible I take the quaife out of the gti6 box and fit the grd crown wheel onto it so it matches everything in the grd box?

Theres no need to strip the gearbox all I do is remove the diff housing from the gti6 box fit it to the grd box and match the grd crown wheel to the quaife and its done ?

Thats my understanding of it unless I missed something.

That's basically it.

  • Remove the GTi-6 speedo drive (3 bolts) and then the diff housing (8 bolts)
  • Remove the Quaife diff, keeping the bearings with it.
  • Remove the GTi-6 crownwheel from the Quaife
  • Do the same with the GRD box and diff
  • Fit the GRD crownwheel to the Quaife, using new bolts preferably and either way with threadlock
  • Fit the Quaife into the GRD box
  • Refit the GRD diff cover and speedo housing, using a little sealant on the mating faces - make sure speedo drive cog locates properly.
  • Fit new driveshaft oil seals (unless the existing ones are nearly new)
You'll need a torque wrench - values are in the older style Haynes manual.

Thank you Anthony

Due to drive shaft issues from fitting gti6 box onto 205 can the grd diff take gti6 driveshafts? To avoid any of the normal nearside driveshat issues can I simply fit the diff housing from the gti6 box and put it onto the grd box ?

Cheers

you would not have any driveshaft issues using the gti6 box.

I have gti6 driveshafts and the engine and box will be fitted to a 306 gti6.

Grd crown wheel will not fit the quaife different fitment to a gti6 Crown wheel and it also fits the other way around so this is not going to happen.

Option 2 is to open up the diff cover off a 306 Hdi box I got of Graham months ago and see if I can use it instead of the 205 Grd box.

If this fails I will just fit the 205 grd box without the quaife.

Yes they do, all BE crownwheels fit any BE box from BE1 to BE4, you maybe getting confused as the standard BE3/6 diff is the stronger version and runs the crownwheel in a different way. Unless someones sold you a MA box?

If you want a fork you need to buy it complete, Not sure if it's available anymore thou. But if its Ok then just refit it, Release bearings can be had from GSF for around £20.00
