Be3 Differential Housing Torque Settings

Recommended Posts

Henry Yorke

Hi,

The Haynes manual doesn't clearly state what the torque settings are for the bolts to mount it to the main gearbox case

There are:

  • 4 x 10mm on the top and bottom of the case
  • 4 x 17mm holding the diff bearings
  • 3 x 13mm holding the speedo drive onto the diff housing

Can someone enlighten me please on the torque settings for the above

I found the 17mm crownwheel bolt settings of 65nm and these are threadlocked

I assume these housing bolts are not threadlocked.

regards,

Henry

I seem to recall doing mine to 25Nm

They don't take any sort of load - and are really just to make a good seal on the diff housing. Used a smear of Wellseal and haven't had any issues.

Was that all of them or just the big ones? I did mine to 41nm as Haynes referred to 10mm bolts at that and 7mm at 12nm on a BE1/5. It seemed a lot of torque for 10mm bolts on a BE3 so I chickened out! I used a smear of RTV around the mating faces but have yet to fill it with oil

I asked the same question a while back as the haynes I was looking at didn't list a great deal either

Final drive half housing bolts, M10; 41Nm 30lbft
Final drive half housing bolts, M7; 12Nm 9lbft.
Speedometer pinion adaptor; 12Nm 9lbft
Final drive extention housing bolts ; 15nm 11lbft

There is an older version of the haynes manual that has a good 40 or so pages dedicated to gearboxes which is very descriptive.

Aha! I think I see my mistake! I have that old orange Haynes manual too. I was assuming it was a 10mm and 7mm bolt when actually an M10 is the 17mm and and M7 is the 10mm one. It was getting late! That is actually what I tightened them too anyway, but I thought they were on tighter than that originally.

Thanks Sam for the useful diagrams as it is bolts 3, 4, 6 and 19 which I was after. I have also learned that 1 daNm = 10 Nm (well I assume so anyway!!)

Yep, for some reason all the torques are in daNm on cit service. No probs on the diagrams. :)
