Asbestos

Anyone know if the sound proofing under the bonnet is made of asbestos? What does the sticker refer to if not the sound proofing?

Thanks

Lewis

The sticker is informing you that some parts if the car could contain asbestos. These were things like the clutch and brake linings. Modern day replacements are now asbestos free but if your car has old original bits these could still contain asbestos.

OK thought it might be clutch etc. Just the sound proofing that I'm worried about because I want to remove it...

The under bonnet sound proofing could have trace amounts, as I remember the one that was fitted to the '88 Renault 5 GT Turbo I had years ago did contain some. Same also went for my '91 Ford Escort LX that was my first car. When I bought my 205 it didn't have the lining fitted so cant be sure on that, but tbh it was quite commonly used in that era.

When I took the lining off my 5 there wasn't a problem removing it, you just made sure you took precautions & get it off in one piece so don't snap/fold it, etc.

still baffles me how such a wonder product could have such a serious "side affect"..

I've had to do loads of training about it and it's nasty stuff

Weird, because I was thinking this the other day.

I've ripped off a few bonnet linings in my time and hopefully it doesn't contain it.

This reminds me of what a veteran technician said to me in work once when we were on about various hand cleaners;

"The old swarfega we used when i was an apprentice was the best, that stuff would get anything off......only one problem; It gave you cancer."

Just a little problem then.

I wish I hadn't read this thread, I have been messing around with cars since the late 70's. Between the clutch and brake changes and cleaning my hands I've not got long left by the sounds of it...... Cheers all, nice knowing you

I was thinking the same Darren. I've eaten sandwiches with brake dust all over my hands I'm sure. I've probably got mere hours left!

General consensus then is that the lining of the bonnet MAY contain asbestos. I'm just going to get the hose out and drench it before removing it while holding my breath!

If you remove it carefully without ripping tearing or otherwise damaging it then there will be no asbestos fibres released and so no risk to the health of you or anyone else in the area. So in the case of the 205 bonnet liner it is a case of very carefully drilling the rivets that secure it to the bonnet and then removing it in one piece.

What about bonnet linings that are stuck on?

Most 309's don't seem to have a lining but mine has crappy foam stuff stuck to it.

Yep horrible stuff and generally people have a very cavalier attitude towards it i think.

I too was concerned and emailed Peugeot and they said they didn't know whether the bonnet liner could contain asbestos, don't forget it hasn't been banned just restricted and some parts especially cheap dodgy Chinese brake pads and linings etc could still have it.

I know you can't tell by looking at it but I don't like the look of the 205 bonnet lining, my 2002 Saxo Vtr has a completely different felt type material and I feel much better about working on that than the 205.

A friend of the family recently died from Mesothelioma and my Uncle who works in water treatment has been diagnosed with Asbestosis.

You'd be surprised where you will find it throughout the day. They used to use it for anything, packing windows and doors when fitting(not automotive). If in any doubt wet it down so the fibres/dust dont fly about. Asbestos removal specialists I worked with used respirators, two sets off hooded overalls, use contamination tents to confine it and shower on the job before going home...but they are ripping kilos off the stuff out. There are a few types of asbestos. All can affect your health but some types are worse than others. I ripped my bonnet lining out years ago, didn't see the need for it.

Does anyone know if the exhaust manifold gaskets contain asbestos?

Remove them in one piece and don’t break them up then there’s minimal problem. Removal of small quantities like this is non licensed asbestos work in industry.

Mine started disintegrating in few areas , and i'm actually living/sleeping in the garage next door .. guess it's best to take it off then ?

Thanks! My GT is a 1990 and I just changed the manifold gaskets the other week and only after thought that it could've been asbestos, although it didn't really look like it was.

Tom is right: there’s minimal problem for you doing it once.

That was dangerous for mechanics removing them everyday or the guys working at the factory.
