Is This Head Any Good? Opinions Please

Recommended Posts

Basically i brought this head years ago and it has been in storage since. I am finally getting around to start my 205 restoration, after 3 years of collecting bits. What i want to know is do any of you clever people on here think this head is any good ( the way its been ported and the larger valves put in). Reason i ask is there is currently a longman head on feebay and i am wondering if it would be a safer bet. I understand this could be hard from pictures but any input would be great. thanks in advice for any help.

ps. i am planning on making a pretty fast, high hp 8v, and obviously head and headwork are very important. Sandy Brown will be getting a pm about building the engine

It needs some tidying up but probably a good starting point. The area circled for example, is very untidy, indicating the port opening was never marked out correctly, leaving a big lump which extends down the port. The part you really need to see is under the valves, in the seat area and the first 20-25mm of the port. Unshrouding the valves like that is normal. It may have big valves with worn guides. You wouldn't know until it's pulled apart. Any builder would want to see it bare.

Hey Peter cheers for the reply, I have had it apart and the guides are new, just bit dirty for storage. Can you tell from the pics if exhaust valves are also bigger? Just wondering cos they have taken a bit out of the side of the camber?

So workable and not worth buying the longman?
